How Video Games are Being Used to Teach Autistic Children?

Video Games are Being Used to Teach Autistic Children

Video games have come under criticism for many years from certain areas describing them as addictive, time consuming and a major influence on a child’s life. However, recently experts have seen how video games are not all doom and gloom as many would have you believe especially when it comes to children who are on the autistic spectrum.

We are seeing more and more that autistic children are actually benefitting from a wide range of video games that are helping them cope with day to day life. Schools, as well as home life, are profiting from the improvement in a child thanks to being taught with video games.

Can video games help autism?

Children with high functioning autism struggle with social skills and are often left feeling isolated as a result. Autistic children can also find it difficult with functioning skills such as organisation, planning, flexibility in structure and dealing with a new situation.

When it comes to teaching an autistic child, often the traditional methods can be thrown out of the window because, child dependent, they can often be ineffective.

However, studies have shown that it is becoming increasingly effective to teach autistic children with video games. Games, apps and other media outlets have been proven to engage children more and improve many life aspects that an autistic child might struggle with on a daily basis.

How video games benefit students with special needs?

Teaching an autistic child with video games is beneficial because they are able to explore a world unlike their own. As we have touched on, autistic children struggle with functional skills but they also struggle with social and emotional skills. Gaming can be a way of breaking down those barriers and allowing the child to open up to children in their class that they may not have done before.

It is becoming increasingly popular for parents and teachers to use even mainstream games such as Mario, Portal 2, Zelda, Lego and in particular Minecraft to promote the use of social and emotional skills, adventure and creativity so that the child can use the skills they have learnt in the game in the real world.

Even games with a sporting theme like FIFA or NBA 2K can help curb hyperactivity and improve behaviour, in particular boys. The quick movement and decision making helps with concentration levels and focus because they have to be precise with their decision. New bookmakers in the UK are always looking to e-sports competitions and an autistic child could be part of that team.

These mainstream games can also encourage you to play as a team and offer co-op levels so that you are playing together and building up a social relationship face to face. Despite some pitfalls surrounding online gaming and online chat, if a child’s console is regulated and their online use is monitored, they can benefit from participating in online gaming with their friends and building their social skills.

In Minecraft, the player is encouraged to explore a world and create their own one whilst completing certain tasks. This can either be done on their own or as part of a team encouraging social skills and function skills in terms of building their own world in this sandbox game. If you choose to use Minecraft as an option for your child, it is important to consider the Minecraft Gaming PC requirements and make sure it will run on your computer or laptop.

However, more specified developed games such as TeachTown are being used in the classroom to help with social and language skills. The game is designed to show an array of images and teach the child some more contextual knowledge and some feelings that they might have towards this object.

Research showed that it enhanced many areas of social communication and reduced behavioural issues. Technology can surely help your child in daily activity, counselling can  be done as well via virtual aba. No need to go there just to get information on your queries.

How can I help my child with video game addiction?

This is where an issue can arise and specifically when does a child need to stop using technology and in particular gaming. For all the benefits of gaming it can be difficult for an autistic child to know when to stop. One moment they are being told that games are helping them and the next they are being told that they need to stop playing.

One of the best ways of approaching the issue is be limiting how much they play their games. Bringing in a structure as to when they can play their games means they can see themselves when they are allowed to play their games and how long they are allowed to play for.

It could also be a good method to involve the child in the planning of the structure so they feel like they have some control on the timetable.

So should video games be used?

All the evidence suggests that an autistic student can benefit greatly from using video games to aid their learning particularly with improving their social skills and functioning skills. They are able to focus more and reduce any behaviour issues that may occur on a daily basis. Using video games can help increase concentration and improve focus in lessons.

So rather than viewing video games as a mindless waste of time, it should be viewed as a way of channelling creativity and improving skills that may have required extra care and attention previously.

Is this the Start of Liverpool Domination?

Liverpool

Liverpool have finally won a domestic cup under Jurgen Klopp. It feels like it has been a long time coming but at the same time they have won nearly everything else from the Premier League to the Club World Cup. However, this does feel different winning the League Cup and being very much in the race for all three other available competitions.

The question remains now, can Liverpool complete a previously unheard of English quadruple?

Why the excitement?

It is often the case that if you win the League Cup in February and you are still in the other competitions there will be talk of the treble or even the quadruple. People often look at new betting offers sign ups to get the best odds on a quadruple or a treble for that club.

Manchester City have set the precedent in recent years with using the League Cup as a standard bar. This is the first season since 2014/15 that they have not won the trophy. In the 2018/19 season it was probably the best for City and one that Liverpool will be looking to emulate this year as City completed a domestic treble. Manchester City also came close to the quadruple last season but fell short in the semifinal of the FA Cup and the final of the Champions League.

Liverpool have been alongside Manchester City in this bid for English domination and have picked up the Champions League, Club World Cup, the long awaited Premier League and now the League Cup after victory Chelsea in the most entertaining 0-0 of all time.

The Merseyside club are looking to achieve domination like they did in the 1980s where they conquered England and Europe. They did achieve a treble in 1983/84 by winning the League, League Cup and European Cup. However, this is not seen as the traditional treble and they will want prove they can do that this season especially with rivals Manchester United the only English winners of the traditional treble in 1998/99.

Why have Liverpool not challenged more for a treble?

When Liverpool achieved the Premier League win in 2019/20 it was huge relief for them. It was also one they had been building towards ever since Jurgen Klopp arrived at the club. There had been missed opportunities in the League Cup final, Europa League final and the Champions League final but these were seen as learning curves more than mediocre attempts in other seasons.

The main problem that Liverpool have had with achieving dominance is their performances in the FA Cup. Under Klopp they have not got further than the fifth round, the current stage they are at now. Klopp has been accused of not taking the FA Cup seriously but he has denied this accusation. However, he does have the squad to compete alongside Manchester City on all fronts and they have made a minimum of the semifinals in the past three seasons.

If Klopp can get past Norwich this week then Liverpool could be set for a historical season.

How are they performing?

With the League Cup already in the bag and Norwich in the next round of the FA Cup they also have to focus on two other fronts. In recent weeks they have been unbeatable in the League as they have not lost since they played Leicester on 28th Dec and are closing in on Manchester City who are six points clear but played one extra game.

Liverpool are among the favourites for the Champions League and hold a 2-0 advantage over Inter Milan going into the 2nd leg at Anfield.

Is the team capable?

There is nothing really stopping Liverpool. They are looking really strong now especially with the return of Virgil Van Dijk at the heart of the defence. He has solidified them once again after his knee injury and has been like a new signing after a tough season last year despite finishing 3rd.

There was also question marks over the famous front three if they could continue to be so prolific but they have done especially Sadio Mane and Mohammed Salah. Both are up there with the best players in the world and are ruthless in front of goal for Liverpool as was proved against Leeds in the 6-0 drubbing.

This is where the backup brigade have also helped. Diogo Jota, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and new signing Luis Diaz are just a few of the players who have stepped up when called upon to help Liverpool on this journey to potential quadruple bliss.

Liverpool are capable and they are going to have to keep this form as they enter the closing stages of the season. Relegation threated teams will be more up for it, competitions will become fiercer and fatigue may kick in but Liverpool could be the first English club to win the quadruple.

Will the Russians Turn to Cryptocurrency?

Cryptocurrency

The situation in Ukraine has escalated massively over the past week and there is real condemnation from the rest of the world to the aggression from Russia. The invasion from Vladimir Putin has sparked outcry with many countries placing big sanctions on Russia meaning they are unable to participate in sporting events, trade with other nations and financial companies putting blocks on Russian companies.

The world is reacting to the news and saying that the unnecessary attack from Russia is not one that can go unpunished. The sanctions are not stopping and they will not stop whilst there is fighting in Ukraine or even in other countries from Russian attackers.

So with these sanctions in place it will affect Russia financially. The rest of the world will feel restrictions with oil and gas predominantly coming from Russia but it will be Russian people that will feel the most of these restrictions especially in terms of their money.

The US, EU and their allies have agreed to cut Russia from the central banking system Swift that the Russians rely on heavily for making payments for products such as oil and gas; exporting. It is a move to further isolate Russia and make them known that the aggression they are displaying is not one that the west supports.

Money in Russia

Before the invasion of Ukraine, Russia was at the forefront of using digital payments especially products such as Google Pay and Apple Pay. However, now they have been cut from using these systems all together and people are fearful that they could lose their money if these sanctions continue. There has already been long queues at ATMs with people wanting to withdraw their money so they physically have it with them.

The Central Bank has stated that card payments will still work for transactions but people are not fully convinced with more and more countries going against Russia and not wanting to deal with Putin in any sort of way just like Visa and Mastercard who are all for the sanctions in place and even donated money to the Ukrainian situation for humanitarian aid.

The bank of Russia also released a statement saying, “External conditions for the Russian economy have changed dramatically. An increase in the key rate will make it possible to ensure an increase in deposit rates to the levels necessary to compensate for the increased devaluation and inflation risks. This will help maintain financial and price stability and protect citizens’ savings from depreciation.”

The US has placed Russia’s top 10 financial institutions, representing about 80% of the country’s banking sector, under restrictions, including cutting off the biggest Sberbank. The EU, US, UK and Canada have agreed to prevent the Russian central bank from deploying its €640bn (£540bn) of international reserves “in ways that undermine the impact of our sanctions”.

So what is the plan for the Russian government now in terms of money? With so many sanctions and uncertainty over the Ruble, which has dropped dramatically, it has been suggested that Russia will turn to cryptocurrency as a way of moving around the sanctions that have been placed on them.

Crypto in Russia

With the Ruble dropping to a record and staggering low of below $0.01, Russians are looking for alternatives and Bitcoin has profited from this. Websites like tradingforexsites.com have been used to help trade Bitcoin and Bitcoin trading at $41,000 on Monday afternoon.

Russian websites with cryptocurrency have been crashing due to the increase in demand for the use of crypto and Bitcoin has been the biggest beneficiary of people putting their money on there.

Paolo Ardiono stated, “It goes without saying the defining characteristics of bitcoin allows it to act as a safe haven during turbulent times.”

People are seeing this as true and are seeing how the Ruble has crashed but Bitcoin, not controlled by the banks, could be the way for rich Russians to go but even worse it could be used easier in a war effort.

Ipek Ozkardeskaya, senior analyst at Swissquote, said, “The direct implication of Russian sanctions was a surge in cryptocurrency prices, and especially Bitcoin. The coin, which was moving along with the risk assets less than a couple of days ago, is now The Asset that Russians and Ukrainians rely on to get their funds out of the traditional system which has become very hostile to them. It is reported that Bitcoin purchases using Rubles and Hryvnias soared as Russia imposed sanctions on its citizens.

Being able to transact value in Bitcoin also helps Russian oligarchs go around the Western sanctions. It may also help Russian companies and even the Russian central bank to move funds as these entities can no longer access US dollars, and most of the Russian banks are no longer part of the SWIFT system.

If there is no policy response from the West to the Bitcoin adoption from Russia, the positive trend could further develop and make Bitcoin the number one safe haven asset in the war setup.”

What Is Delta 8 THC Gummies? Everything You Need To Know About This Cannabinoid

Delta 8 THC Gummies

Delta 8 THC gummies are a type of edible that is becoming very popular in the medical marijuana industry. These types of edibles offer different effects than other medicating methods like smoking or vaporizing, and are often preferred because it can be easier for some people to consume cannabis this way since they don’t have to inhale smoke. They may also produce a more intense high as well, which can make them better suited for certain medicinal purposes where higher doses would help the best address your needs.

The Basics Of Delta-8 THC Gummies

Delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) gummy bears are made from sugar and gelatin powder just like traditional candies you might find at your local supermarket— but these ones contain 10mg per bear instead! The “gummy” part comes from the fact that delta 8 is an oil extract. To get enough into each candy without overwhelming taste buds, there must be something sweet on the outside coating with herbal oils inside; hence why CBD/hemp has gotten so popular lately too.

What Does Delta 8 THC Gummies Feel Like?

While they are not a “candy” per say, they do taste like one. The flavor of this product is very mild but it does have a strong minty flavor that lingers on the tongue. It’s very refreshing and makes for a great morning treat when you’re feeling a little under the weather.

How Do Delta-8 THC Gummies Affect You?

Delta-8 gummies are an ideal choice for those who want to experience the effects of marijuana without having to smoke or vaporize it, which is why so many people are choosing these over other options. THC gummy bears can be more potent than other candies with higher doses and because they contain 10mg of THC per bear, you can consume more of them without having to worry about getting too high.

What Are Delta-8 THC Gummies Used For?

Delta-8 gummies are a great option for those who want to experience the effects of marijuana without smoking or vaporizing it, which is why so many people are choosing these over other options. THC gummy bears can be more potent than other candies with higher doses and because they contain 10mg of THC per bear, you can consume more of them without having to worry about getting too high. They’re also ideal for those who want to use CBD/hemp extracts in their foods but don’t want the taste.

What Happens If You Overdose On Delta 8 THC Gummies?

If you take more than 10mg of delta-8 gummies at once, you could get a very unpleasant experience. This is because the THC in Delta-8 gummies is absorbed into your body at different rates for different people, and some people are more sensitive to the effects of THC than others. If you have a high tolerance for marijuana, you might not feel any effects from these candies.

Can You Build Tolerance to Delta 8 THC?

If you are going to use Delta-8 gummies for a long period of time, you will probably build up a tolerance for them. This is normal and happens with other edible marijuana products as well. If you want to stop using Delta-8 gummies, then it’s best to stop consuming them altogether. You can also try taking smaller doses over time in order to get used to their effects before increasing your dosage.

How Long Does Delta 8 THC Last?

If you eat the entire candy bar in one sitting (about 5 minutes), it should take about an hour before the effects wear off. If you eat it at different times throughout the day, then it could take longer than an hour before your body metabolizes all of the THC.

If you want to get high off Delta-8 gummies, then you should consume them for at least 2 hours before going to bed. If you eat them in the morning, then it might take up to 8 hours for your body to metabolize all of the THC from Delta-8 gummies. Therefore, you should eat them for at least 3 hours before going to bed.

Become Brilliant at Baccarat – The Different Ways You Can Play Online

Baccarat

Baccarat is a comparing card game of guesses and wit. Many historians believe the game dates back to Italy in the 1400s, and started as a card game for the upper class and aristocrats. In the modern day, Baccarat is popular amongst avid gamblers and fictional British spy James Bond, alike.

With the advances in technology, and online casinos continuing to rise in popularity, games of Baccarat are easier to access than ever before. There are a variety of ways in which the game can be enjoyed, with computer software allowing gaming developers to create more unique and themed versions of the game. On top of this, there’s the live casino, and Baccarat is one of the lucky games to have made it into the hands of a real-life dealer, to be enjoyed within the luxury of your very own at-home casino.

Read on to find out more.

Online Baccarat – the basics

Baccarat is played between two hands – the player and the banker, and there are three possible results for every round. These include; an outcome in which the player has the highest score, one in which the banker has the highest score, and another in which the outcome is a tie.

Baccarat is unique in comparison to other casino games as cards are dealt before bets are placed, and after this, four cards are kept on the table. All face cards have a value of zero, an ace has a value of one, and all remaining cards score at their face value. The objective is to predict which hand will acquire a total that’s closest to nine.

Online casinos host a variety of Baccarat games, with Random Number Generators (RNGs) producing an unpredictable outcome, and keeping gameplay fair, so you can become brilliant at Baccarat, at your own pace, from the comfort of your own home.

Live Baccarat

If it’s a more immersive casino experience you’re after, then live Baccarat online is just the thing for you. You can experience the joy of Baccarat, whilst brushing up your skills and trying different themed versions of the game, in real-time, with a real-life dealer!

Live Baccarat is hosted from a specialist studio, with a professional dealer and cameras capturing gameplay. Cards are microchipped and data is transferred in real time to your device, so you can truly immerse yourself into the game, as though you were standing in the casino yourself. What’s more, there’s a live chat feature so you can interact with the dealer, and the game, as well as its betting options are explained, so you can really feel like a pro in no time.

Chemin de Fer

Once you’ve mastered Baccarat, you’ll be thrilled to know that there are more variations of the classic game for you to delve into. Chemin de Fer is typically played in European and Latin American casinos, but is a familiar face on many online casinos, too.

First appearing in France, Chemin de Fer literally translates to “railway”, and is commonly played with six shuffled decks of cards at a time.

The game is generally played with between eight to twelve players, and the objective remains to create a total of nine in your hand. This should be done with two or three cards, and the players around the ‘kidney-shaped’ table, will bet against each other.

In order to try your luck at Chemin de Fer, we recommend brushing up on your Baccarat skills, and once you feel as confident as James Bond perhaps would, then even more exciting Baccarat games at your favourite online casino are just waiting for you to master.

Is Compass Realty A Pyramid Scheme?

real estate

As one of the leading real estate companies in the game right now, Compass realty is under the spotlight within the industry. Potential agents, employees, and customers want to know more about the business and how they make their money, as Compass has seen a great deal of success in a short period of time.

As Compass realty operates through a commission-based system, it leaves some people asking whether they are a pyramid scheme. However, there are many differences between the way Compass operates and that of a pyramid scheme. Here we will have a look at some of the most prominent differences between Compass and pyramid schemes.

Legitimacy

One of the main points to focus on here is that the way Compass works is perfectly legal. In many parts of the world, pyramid schemes are illegal and frowned upon. Although Compass takes a cut of their agents’ sales commission, this is agreed to and how the majority of real estate companies work all over the world.

Compass has built up a strong reputation in the USA over the past 10 years, which they wouldn’t have been able to if they had been a pyramid scheme, as pyramid schemes are widely seen as unethical and wrong. They are now also the largest independent real estate brokerage in America, which again, wouldn’t be the case if they’d not been legitimate in the work they do.

Employees

When it comes to pyramid schemes, those at the top want as many people to sign up to the scheme, as it usually gives them a pay boost due to hefty signup fees. These are often attached to the promise that once they’re on board they will make money from selling products provided.

Compass, however, states on their website that last year alone over 140,000 prospective agents and employees applied to join their team. Yet, they only actually hired 1%. This highlights that they’re valuing the quality of who they get on board, rather than just looking to grow their numbers. The fact that such a huge number of people want to sign up also speaks volumes – as usually, with pyramid schemes, people need to be coaxed in.

Money, money, money

So, why do all these employees want to sign up to work for Compass? Well surely because they’ve heard good things and seen the success that it has had within the market. A lot of the time, pyramid schemes mostly just bring money in for the few people at the top of the operations. Which once again, is another one of the vast differences to keep in mind. If you work for Compass, you’re getting access to innovative technology to help streamline the selling and buying of homes. This can make agents’ jobs a lot easier.

So, all in all, hopefully, this has answered the question – Compass has many different qualities that make it stand apart from a pyramid scheme. The success they’ve seen is only possible because they were a genuine company.

6 Reasons To Use Online Or Mobile Banking

online banking

Whether you decide to use a mobile app to take care of your finances or stick to in-store banking, there are plenty of reasons why using one or the other should be a priority for you. However, with mobile banking being one of our generation’s most significant technological advancements, it has changed the way we bank forever, and you should definitely make the most out of it.

Online banking is easy to get started, and you don’t need any advanced digital engineering knowledge to use it to your advantage. And since there are many reasons why utilizing an online bank to manage your finances is so popular, you should definitely start using it as soon as possible and significantly improve your banking experience.

This article will explore the most important reasons why you need online banking in your life.

Online Banking Lets You Get Account Access Right Away

You may log in and view your bank account data at any time using online or mobile banking. When you check your accounts, you can view your pending transactions and balance at a glance, allowing you to determine whether you can pay for things without being overdrawn.

You can also analyze your recent transaction history and bank statements in real-time, which is an excellent method to keep track of transactions that have been posted to your account, regardless of where you are. Additionally, account notifications can be set up to warn you of the activity of your account so you can respond swiftly to any questionable activities.

You Can Even Schedule Automatic Payments

Online banking also allows you to schedule payments in advance. For instance, your online banking account can be used to set up salaries, rents, and other fixed payments in any amount. These payments are deducted automatically in the amount you specify on the day you specify, eliminating the need for physical checks or postage.

Transferring Money Between Bank Accounts Becomes Incredibly Fast

You can move money between your multiple accounts using online and mobile banking, which is especially beneficial if you have scheduled automatic payments on some account or if one of your account balances is low and a recent purchase could cause your account to overdraw. With mobile banking, you can quickly transfer funds to the account in question and efficiently manage your finances from the comfort of your home.

In addition, if you want to send money to someone you know and trust, online banks allow you to send and receive money from one bank account to another using only the receiver’s phone number or e-mail address.

Deposits On the Go

Mobile banking apps allow you to deposit checks into your account by photographing them and depositing them electronically. This is a usually free service that deposits the funds into your account faster and saves you time by avoiding depositing the check physically at the bank. The cash put in your account usually is available within 24 hours, but sometimes, it may take a couple of days. This secure and straightforward online banking feature eliminates the stress of wasting time standing in lines at the bank or rushing to get there before it closes.

It Can Help You Lower You Overhead Fees

The most significant advantage of using a mobile-only bank is offering more competitive rates than more traditional banks. Many mobile-only banks offer interest-bearing checking accounts without monthly service fees or minimum balance requirements. They also typically have low overdraft fees and refund ATM fees. In addition, they usually don’t require a monthly maintenance fee or minimum balance so that you won’t pay any unnecessary charges on your balance.

Additionally, some online banks have an online savings account option that has no inactivity fee, so if it’s the only bank account you use, you don’t have to worry about the account being shut down for not having enough activity on it.

Russian Sphere of Influence: What is it? What Could It Be?

Russian

By Timo Kivimäki

The Russian demand of ending the expansion of NATO to its borders has raised debate in the international media and academia. These demands have been correctly interpreted as belonging to the broader world view in which great powers are entitled to a sphere of influence in their immediate vicinity. What such spheres of influence are more precisely, has not been defined in the political debate. The reference to “spere of influence” has floated, serving different political objectives of either legitimising or demonising Russian demands. Building political arguments with concepts that have changing and unclear references has confused the debate: is it acceptable for great powers to demand a sphere of influence in their vicinity? Why is it so dangerous if Russia now demands such in Ukraine and elsewhere? What kind of sphere would such a sphere of influence be?

To clarify what the Russian demand means, we will have to start by looking at what exactly does a “sphere of influence” mean. Yet, to help resolve the political dispute related to the Russian demands, we will have to go even further in our conceptual analysis and recognize the nature of political concepts: the sphere of influence is not something that is given to us, but rather, the reference of the concept needs to the negotiated. There is a need to look at what could be an acceptable sphere of influence, as a contribution to a stable, rule-based international order, and what kind of sphere of influence cannot be part of a just international order. To help political argumentation and negotiation this article aims at clarifying the existing understanding on the concept of sphere of influence, and at analysing whether the Russian demand of spheres of influence could be redefined in a way that would be acceptable to the West.

What is a Sphere of Influence?

Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a sphere of influence as “a territorial area within which the political influence or the interests of one nation are held to be more or less paramount.” Such political influence would naturally take place within another country’s borders, and thus it could have consequences to the target country’s sovereignty. Yet, a sphere of influence is not as extensive compromise to sovereignty as an occupation or colonization, and it is often not defined in formal agreements. On the contrary, Hedley Bull, one of the leading figures of the English tradition of international relations theory, argues in his book The Anarchical Society that informality is often quite functional for arrangements of informal power. An explicit asymmetry could be more difficult to justify for the target of great power influence. According to Van Jackson, a sphere of influence is negotiated implicitly between the influencer and target of influence, and it forms an implicit, unequal, hegemonic “contract.” Yet, the sphere often develops over time.

An important part of the dynamic of sphere of influence is a de facto agreement amongst other great powers of each other’s spheres of influence. In the English tradition of international relations theory, this mutual acceptance has often been assumed to be based on the mutuality and reciprocity. Bull refers to such arrangements as “manifestations of formal justice” between great powers, if each great power accepts equal rights to spheres of influence to the others. Geddes W. Rutherford describes such mutual agreements on spheres of influence as gentlemen’s agreements. The Russian argument referring to the Cuban Crisis of 1962 and the fact that the United States would never accept anti-American military alliances in nearby countries echoes this understanding of formal justice. Paul Keal studied Cold War spheres of influence and concluded that both superpowers had their own, yet different spheres of influence codified in the Brezhnev and the Johnson Doctrines.

Yet, spheres of influence are not just normative arrangements, and the mutual agreement of great powers of each other’s spheres of power are not just arrangements that great powers agree for their moral virtues. Spheres of influence are often based on the realism of geography and exercise of power. They exist in areas where other great powers cannot challenge the “owner” of a sphere of influence. This used to be the Finnish argument during the Cold War era for accepting its position in the Soviet sphere of influence: Finland is small, Soviet Union is powerful, and other great powers are too far from Finland to help if Finland cannot sort out its relationships with the Soviet Union. A different matter is whether Russia can still claim the same power political status as the Soviet Union could. From a power political point of view the crucial question is whether the Western alliance would be capable to defend Ukraine (or Finland, Baltic countries or other Russian neighbors) against Russian aggression.

How should we define acceptable and unacceptable spheres of influence?

While the basics of the sphere of influence can be defined as above, it is crucial for the debate that the concept is defined further. What the NATO, Republican administration of former president Trump and the Democratic Party administration of President Biden reject in the the idea of spheres of influence is not necessarily the same things as the Republican former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and the Democratic Party presidential Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski support in the concept. Further distinctions need to be made to define what is useful and what is not useful in the concept. Different kinds of concepts of sphere of influence may have different implications on democracy, sovereignty and crisis stability. Thus, it is important to create classifications on the basis of different consequences of such a sphere in order to see what kind of compromises should and should not be granted to Russia in its immediate neighborhood.

Influence as such cannot be the main reason for rejecting the idea of Russian sphere of influence in Russia’s immediate vicinity. We cannot do away the fact that international relations always involve influence. As a greater power than its neighbors (except China), Russia will always have an asymmetrical influence on its neighbors. However, it would be important the define what kind of influence is compatible with the idea of sovereignty, democracy and international stability. This would be crucial for the settlement of the conflict between NATO/US and Russia.

The first issue that the international media has focused on with regards to the Russian demands is the question of sovereignty and democracy. If Russia’s neighbors feel that their existence as independent, democratic, sovereign nations is threatened by Russia’s sphere of influence, they will naturally fight against Russia with all their might and invite other great powers to support them. This would not be optimal to anyone, let alone to democracy and peace. For Russia, good relations with neighboring countries is a defensive benefit even if it then requires Russia to refrain from promoting its offensive security interests in its neighborhood.

In the previous experiences of Soviet influence, we can see two kinds of interferences into democratic sovereignty of neighboring countries. On the one hand, Soviet Union helped keep in power rulers in Eastern Europe that were resented by East Europeans. This was very expensive and it generated the bad will that Russia now has to deal with in Ukraine, and in Russia’s former East European satellite states. On the other hand, in Finland (and some suggest, occasionally in Germany), Russian influence was declared to focus on foreign relations only. Domestic policies were supposed to be ruled out from the asymmetrical interaction. For example, the power of the communist party was often much smaller in Finland than in almost any other Western European country. Yet, in reality, Finnish politicians could occasionally use the Russian influence and threat for their personal benefit in domestic political power play. Furthermore, secrecy in Soviet diplomacy sometimes involved interference that only the opening of political archives revealed afterwards.

Interference into domestic politics is certainly something that Europeans will not accept in Russia’s neighborhood. That kind of sphere of influence should then be explicitly removed from the negotiation table by creating normative obstacles and transparency to rule out the possibility of secret coercion by Russia. Furthermore, the Russian protection of Russian speakers within neighboring countries should be dealt with by non-partisan mechanisms of human rights rather than by a powerful neighbor. It is not fair to declare ethnic Russian Ukrainians or the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine a security threat and discriminate against the Russian language in a country where a considerable minority is Russian speakers. Yet, antagonism between ethnic Ukrainians and ethnic Russian Ukrainians is only escalated if Russia interferes in Ukrainian affairs by “protecting” ethnic Russians: such interference only makes the perception of ethnic Russian Ukrainians as a security threat more real. Such violations against minority or religious rights should be dealt with by the Council of Europe, the UN Human Rights Council or another representative international organization, which cannot be seen as an escalating security threat by the state of Ukraine. Similarly, when an ethnic Russian Ukrainian president that has been elected in elections in which “voting met most international standards for democratic elections and consolidated progress that had been made since 2004”, has been ousted in a process that has not complied with the constitution of the country, the situation should not have been the responsibility of Russia to correct. Politicising such processes, and side-lining international institutions that should deal with these issues, only escalates conflict and undermines democracy.

While interference into domestic affairs in the name of sphere of influence is unacceptable, pragmatic international relations set limits to sovereign rights, too. From the Russian point of view, national sovereignty and people’s democratic rights in Russia’s neighboring countries cannot extend to decisions that threaten the existence of Russia as a sovereign country. If this takes place, great powers tend to react, as happened in the Cuban Crisis in 1962, where no international law banned the Cuban acquisition or hosting of Soviet nuclear weapons, and yet, the United States was prepared to go to war to prevent it. Similarly, Russia can be criticised for moving offensive troops to the border of Ukraine or Baltic states, despite the fact that such a move would naturally be within the sovereign rights of Russia. From the perspective of peace, it would be essential if the rules of influence would support defensive security interests at the expense of offensive ones. If the European security architecture is built in a way that no country had existential threats, this defensive security would justify compromises to offensive power and security interests. Thus, if neighboring countries refrained from security arrangements that constituted offensive threats to their neighbors, there would also be less offensive threat and militarized reactions against them. Such logic has, in fact, been recognised within the NATO: Norway, a member of the organisation, has both opted not to host US nuclear weapons, and not even allow NATO troops close to its borders with Russia. According to the country’s Defense Minister Anniken Huitfeldt “It is important for Norway to be militarily present in our immediate surroundings. But very close to the Russian border, we believe that we do it best ourselves, with Norwegian planes and Norwegian frigates. It is fundamental for us.” This is in order not to provoke legitimate defensive Russian security concerns and in order not to shorten Russia’s warning time from the detection of an attack to the arrival of missiles.

The importance of time from an attack to retaliation has guided some scholars, as well as politicians like Kissinger and Brzezinski to suggest that despite national sovereignty and the legal right of states to decide their own security policy, it would be in their own defensive interests to avoid creating existential security threats that would require a fast response from Russia. In such conditions false alarms could trigger a deadly retaliation and threaten the neighboring country’s very existence. The need to avoid shortening warning time from attack was the primary concern of the US National Security Council’s strategy in the Reykjavik Summit-related negotiations with Soviet Union in 1986 on Europe’s security architecture: from the point of view of crisis stability, the US needed to focus disarmament on missiles that could offer the attacker an advantage due to the short time from the detection to the arrival of missiles. President Putin speech emphasised this aspect, too, on the 21st of December 2021, as he complained that Ukraine’s NATO membership would bring US missiles within minutes from Moscow. Thus, from the point of view of crisis stability and defensive security of both Russia and its neighboring countries, it would be possible to argue as Kissinger and Brzezinski do, and suggest that Ukraine should stay out of the Western military alliance.

A Sphere of Influence, or a Sphere of Defensive Interest

Yet, for Ukraine, the situation is now complicated as Russian troops are already in the country and that Crimea has already been occupied by the powerful neighbor. Balancing against such violations of the basic principles of good neighborhood would be natural from Ukraine. Yet, accepting NATO missiles could create a situation that Putin describes. A solution in Ukraine may require that Russia must withdraw its troops from Eastern Ukraine and give up Crimea, while Ukraine needs to be subjected to internationally controlled regime of human rights norms to protect ethnic Russian Ukrainians. Thus, there is a need for negotiations between US and Russia, NATO and Russia and Ukraine and Russia, and a need for a bargain that minimises Russian interference in Ukraine’s (and other Russian neighbor’s) domestic and trade policies, and yet deals with the legitimate Russian defensive security concerns and increases the warning time for attacks against Russia, so that Russia will not be provoked to power political countermoves or tricked to retaliation on a false alarm.

While Russia requires security guarantees from the NATO/US/Ukraine and demands that NATO will not expand any further towards Russian borders, the country could be offered conditions for such guarantees. Finland’s flexible policy towards NATO could offer some ideas once the rules of influence in the Russian neighborhood have been established. Finland and Ukraine could keep their options open towards NATO but commit to non-accession if Russia respects the negotiated rules of neighborliness that forbit Russian interference into domestic policies and international economic affairs. If the neighboring countries violate this agreement and allow such military developments in their territory that constitute existential security threats to Russia or reduce the warning time of a Western attack on Russia, then we would be back to the tense situation with Russian threats and possible military actions against its neighbors.

The solution to the impasse caused by the Russian demand of a sphere of influence could therefore be based on a small alteration of the concepts we operate with: instead of recognizing a power political sphere of influence, the West could recognize a Russian sphere of defensive interests. Since the Russian neighborhood is more essential for the Russian than US legitimate defensive security interests, the vicinity of Russian border should be asymmetrically concerned with Russian rather than US interests. In this way the region near to Russia would be subjected to a well-defined and explicitly limited Russian sphere of interest, not to a power political Russian sphere of influence.
