However, some games managed to attract more attention than others in this tough market. Because of that, we decided to reveal the highest-grossing games of 2023, so far. For this article, we are using data from the start of the year, up until October 2023.
1. Hogwarts Legacy
On the top of the list, we have Hogwarts Legacy, which sold over 15 million copies so far. It attracted the attention of a lot of gamers, as many of them are huge Harry Potter fans. This title came out in February and it managed to generate over $1 billion by May.
Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world RPG where the action takes place in the late 1800s. This is a century before the actual events of the Harry Potter novels. In this game, you get to control a student in the Wizarding School who learns to wield a variety of magical skills.
2. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Next, we have the new instalment of the Legend of Zelda. This action/adventure game was highly anticipated ever since Nintendo announced it as a follow-up to Breath of the Wild. In the first three days, it managed to sell over 10 million copies, which is a major success.
It too features the open world of Hyrule, just like in the previous instalment. In this game, you are playing with Lick, where your objective is to search for Princess Zelda.
You will also engage in fights to prevent the Demon King from destroying the world. The gameplay is super entertaining and adventurous, meaning you won’t get bored playing it.
3. Madden NFL 24
The third spot features a sports title, or more specifically Madden NFL 24. This game came out on August 18th and it managed to break a digital sales record for a single week.
Compared to the previous installment, this one generated more players during the first week. The game has mixed reviews, just like all Madden NFL titles so far. But, the numbers speak for themselves. Also, the sales will continue to rise as there are still several weeks until the end of the year.
EA Sports made sure to develop more realistic movements and more lifelike player models. They also included many other features, which make the gameplay more engaging.
4. Diablo IV
Diablo IV came out in early June and it became the fastest-selling game in Blizzard Entertainment’s history. During the first five days of its release, this game managed to generate $666 million in revenue. These crazy stats also brought to the the top of the most streamed games in Twitch in 2023. By August, it featured 12 million players, which is a staggering number to achieve in around two months.
This game allows you to create a character from one of five playable classes. You then use their unique skills to complete quests through various combats. It’s the perfect title for RPG players.
5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
A Call of Duty title is almost always among the most-sold games of the year. This year we have Modern Warfare 2, which actually came out in October 2022. But, so many players were interested in it that it found its way on this list.
It managed to generate $800 million in the first 3 days and $1 billion in the first 10 days. This actually made it the best-selling game of 2022 in the US.
The action of this game takes place in a realistic and modern setting. Players will surely enjoy this title, as it features a super interesting story.
6. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
On the 6th spot, we have the sequel of the first instalment of the Star Wars Jedi. This title came out on April 28th and it quickly gained the appreciation of the fans. The story in this action/adventure game takes place 5 years after the events of the previous instalment.
It continues the adventure of Cal Kestis, the young Jedi Knight. It is a game that is mostly appreciated by Star Wars fans.
7. Starfield
Starfield is next on this list, which is a fairly new game that came out on September 6th. During the first two hours of its release, over 230,000 concurrent players accessed the game on Steam. It became the most-played next-gen title ever on Xbox.
It is an action RPG where you can switch between first-person and third-person perspectives. The game also comes with an open world, which is a big trend nowadays.
8. Mortal Kombat 1
Among the highest-grossing games, we also have a fighting game. That is Mortal Kombat 1, from the legendary game franchise that dates from the 1990s. It entered the market on September 19th and it almost reached the top US game chart for the month. Only Starfield was in front of this title.
This game is also a sequel to Mortal Kombat 11 and it takes place in a new timeline. In it you will find a story mode, an online multiplayer option, and and offline gameplay.
9. Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 4 came out on March 2023 as a remake of the installment released back in 2005. In the first two days prior to the release, the game sold three million units. This made it one do the fastest-selling Resident Evil games ever.
By July, this new installment of the series managed to sell 5 million copies. The story of this game is super exciting as you control a US agent. You’re objective is to save the daughter of the US president.
10. MLB: The Show 23
Last on this list we have MLB: The Show 23, a baseball video game that had its initial release on March 24th. This game had many positive reviews upon its release. It also generated a lot of interest among baseball fans, who didn’t think twice when buying a copy of the game.
This instalment comes with a new game mode where the focus is on the African-American leagues. It will consist of 8 players that were playing in these leagues, including several legends of the game.
