Climate change is a global challenge. The nightmares increase in Australia with higher temperatures, extreme droughts, and flash fires. [1] [2] [3] A phenomenon that appears to include California as a nephew to Australia. California is appearing to resemble Sydney with heat waves, less rain, and an early end to winter. David Attenborough, an English broadcaster, and natural historian, describes this crisis as “the biggest threat modern humans have ever faced.” [4] The similarities between what happened in the Sydney Forest Fires in 2020 and what happened in the San Gabriel Mountains in California are so great that you can’t tell which is which. We need an applied solution to the climate change crisis that is the common interest point between the Republicans and the Democrats of the US, the Conservatives and the Australian Labor Party, and all humans across the globe.

Political will is necessary to overcome the challenge of climate change. [5] [6] [7] Guaranteeing broad cooperation between universities, institutions, and organizations active in the field of environment and climate change through more grants and funding. Barack Obama’s visit to Australia in 2014 to attend the G20 Summit and his inspirational speech at the University of Queensland was a step forward for the two territories (Australian and the United States) working on climate change, in cooperation, which began to break down some barriers and develop more scientific and practical cooperation in this area. Perhaps if this collaboration could increase, then the problems associated with this threat would be mitigated. And now, President Joe Biden’s decision to increase fossil fuel exports to European countries must not ignore the super-challenge of climate change that threatens the lives of all human beings on our planet. But what the problem is? The simple answer is that the financial benefits of investing in fossil fuels are perhaps the biggest obstacle to such cooperation. And the preference for short-term profits over longer-term benefits is the only ailment, meanwhile, our planet is suffocating. As researchers, we feel that the short-term financial benefits are not more important than the challenges that threaten human survival. Indeed, capitalists and politicians have not yet realized the importance, the seriousness, and the urgency of this threat. We must care about the land as a home for survival, growth, and even financial gain for all its inhabitants. Indeed, an applied solution to the climate change crisis is the common interest point between the Republicans and the Democrats of the US, the Conservatives and the Australian Labor Party, and all humans across the globe. The key lessons of the pandemic and the Ukraine war are necessary to overcome the challenge of climate change. And we will highlight these lessons in this article. This article can be a road map to alleviate the suffering of the people across the globe and build a more stable future for them.

Learning from the COVID-19 Crisis and the Ukraine War Crisis

The global crises taught us how to fight climate change more effectively. People look at fossil fuel differently since the Ukraine war. We hope that many world political and business leaders have learned from the COVID-19 Crisis. The COVID-19 crisis killed millions of people around the world and taught political leaders a lesson. Lesson learned; we must heed expert opinions. In the United States of America, one of the most important statements President Biden made in his speech was that “He would be willing to take the vaccine publicly as soon as Doctor Fauci says it’s safe, in an effort to boost public confidence.” [9] Now it is time to implement the lessons in battling the climate change crisis and make more use of climate change experts for macro-political and economic decisions. Expert opinions can prevent wrong decisions, provide positive personal experiences, and improve perceptions.

As we face the energy crisis today, sensitivity to environmental change has grown more of a concern than ever. COVID-19 revealed to world political and business leaders the importance of butterfly theory which showed how a seemingly small phenomenon can have a profound effect on political and economic systems around the world. The world’s political and business leaders are now becoming more sensitive and more aware of the events and their consequences for the company or country under their leadership. Political and business leaders need to be more sensitive than ever to the consequences of this global super-crisis on their companies and economy, and they can adopt effective strategies and policies to successfully battle the climate change crisis. The task of environmental activists here is to focus on the climate consequences and highlight them in order to increase the level of sensitivity of political and business leaders to facilitate responses to this crisis.

Focusing on long-term consequences rather than short-term issues is another lesson that is better understood today in the energy crisis. Transactional Leadership: Strengthening Your Ability to Influence People

James MacGregor Burns added this profound statement: “leadership is one of the most observed and least understood phenomena on earth.” [1] Furthermore, Warren Bennis and Burton Nanus found “no clear and unequivocal understanding exists as to what distinguishes leaders from non-leaders.” [2] Thus, no single definition includes all the aspects of leadership. The key idea of this article is to cover in-depth throughout transactional leadership and provide a better understanding of this leadership aspect that has emerged as more adaptable today than the many others that are available today.  

Introduction

Transactional leadership means just what it says. It is a quid per quo type of relationship between the follower and leader. A carrot on the stick approach. It involves determining the tasks, rewarding goal achievement and punishing failure in attaining goals. Two scholars by the names of Antonio Marturano and Jonathan Gosling believe that the effectiveness of this leadership style is dependent on two conditions. [3] One being that the current differences in organizational hierarchies and structures are totally accepted by subordinates and the second being that all the employees are able to work towards mutual exchange of benefits where they are rewarded for achieving the determined goals. It is somewhat reactive, however, because a benefit can be held back or taken away if the follower did not achieve the determined goals.

This leadership assumes impersonal interactions in reality where leaders do not consider higher humanistic desires or relationships between leaders and followers. Consequently, this form of leadership is still based on grounded theory that does not explore a desired probable situation. While it has its limitations it is still widely used in organizations.

Some scholars, however, such as James MacGregor Burns, Edwin Hollander and Arthur Jue illustrate that this form of leadership is successful in developing mutual exchange between leaders and employees in organizations. [1] [4] [5] In addition, it can be inferred that transactional leadership is linked with organizational effectiveness, particularly in terms of achieving goals. This is the reason that it is so popular among practicing managers today. The key is for managers to use it sparingly, on occasion, when new details and tasks are assigned but not as the main type of leadership.                                                                                                          

Another aspect of the transactional style is passive management by exception or laissez-faire leadership. Laissez-faire is characterized through managing the situation where a problem has occurred and leaders take a reactive approach to correct mistakes or to overcome problems. This was uncovered by Robert Blake and Jane Mouton in the management grid research and still has importance in clarifying the type of transactional leader in some instances.

This style of leadership has been critiqued in the literature as leaders are not concerned with proactively identifying or preventing problems. They do not advocate for knowledge sharing and joint problem solving with subordinates. Hence, it is rational to state that laissez-faire leaders do not possess high commitment in seeking the proposed solutions jointly with their subordinates. Moreover, when such leaders assume the responsibility or intervention to solve problems, they rarely consider the empowerment of their employees to assist. Due to this limitation, a scholar by the name of Josef Frischer suggests that leaders today should empower followers to engage in problem solving. [6] In this way, transactional leadership can be used to review tasks and goals and requirements of subordinates but then move to more empowerment type leadership styles.

Decoding Transactional Leadership Practices  

There is a plethora of leadership theories and models that attempt to consider leadership as an enabler of firm performance. There is an increased emphasis on the important role of leaders when interacting with followers and stakeholders. [7]

James MacGregor Burns’ leadership theory, in particular, posited that transactional leadership style is a new performance paradigm evident in organizations today. However, linking the role that transactional leaders play an important role in improving organizational performance is not particularly valid. On the other hand, understanding this dimension from a transactional leadership and performance paradigm may provide a significant realization bridging this important field of leadership and management.

For example, transactional leadership involves determining the tasks, rewarding goal achievement, and punishing failure in attaining goals. By synthesizing Antonio Marturano and Jonathan Gosling’s work we identified a code to decode transactional leadership. They claim that the effectiveness of transactional leadership style is dependent on two conditions. The first being that the current differences in organizational hierarchies and structures are totally accepted by subordinates and, the second, being that all the employees are able to work towards mutual exchange of benefits and where they are rewarded for achieving the determined goals. Scholars look at it as a passing fancy, a myth, or a schematic diagram that has not been tried and true. Unfortunately for scholars, this is not true. Millions of managers were trained in transactional leadership and it has advanced into organization’s success—-both from a performance and management level.

Transactional leadership assumes impersonal interactions in which leaders do not consider higher humanistic desires or relationships between leaders and followers. Consequently, this form of leadership does not explore a desired probable situation. In lieu of transactional leadership, a more acceptable leadership style using the concepts of transformational leadership is much richer in both followership and acceptance. The myth, therefore consists between what James MacGregor Burns and Edwin Hollander illustrate as transactional leadership being useful in developing mutual exchange between leaders and employees in organizations. There is some fallacy with the myth in that it can be inferred that transactional leadership is linked with organizational performance, particularly in terms of achieving goals. 

Another aspect of the transactional leadership style is that managers using this style are passive by exception or laissez-faire when applying leadership. Laissez-faire is characterized through managing the situation where a problem has occurred, and leaders take a reactive approach to correct mistakes or to overcome problems. This brings up another myth of the usefulness of transactional leadership. For instance transactional leadership style has been critiqued by scholars as a leadership approach that is not concerned with proactively identifying or preventing problems. Transactional leaders do advocate for knowledge sharing and joint problem solving with subordinates.

Laissez-faire leaders do not possess high commitment in seeking the proposed solutions jointly with their subordinates. When such leaders assume the responsibility or intervention to solve problems, they rarely consider the empowerment of their employees to assist in problem solving and goal setting. The myth of transactional leadership further delineates the suggestion that leaders today should empower followers to engage in problem solving. In this situation, leaders would begin using transactional leadership to set goals and determine tasks and then, when time allows, move toward more transformational leadership and place more emphasis more empowered to engage followers.

In Conclusion            

Transactional leadership does affect organizational performance through achieving business goals. And four scholars by the names of Timothy Obiwuru, Andy Okwu, Victoria Akpa and Idowu Nwankwere affirm this relationship. [8] They shed light on the critical role of transactional leaders in enhancing non-financial performances, particularly in terms of improving organizational commitment. Transformational leadership provides a frank appellation of the importance when beginning a leader-follower relationship, downsizing, upsizing, onboarding, and making significant changes to structure and organizational improvements but leaders must be aware of its limitations. Just as leaders need to be both autocratic and democratic at times they also need to be both transactional and transformational at times also. Knowing both styles and when is best to use them is the important concern here and will defunct the myth of transactional leadership as being an adequate style of leading in and of itself.

Whereas if an individual is not educated he tends to make more mistakes because he does not know the fine print. An uneducated individual believes in the trial or error method. If he succeeds in his trial, he pursues or else he drops. The uneducated man mostly believes in observation and practical knowledge. The success rate is far higher in educated men rather in an uneducated man. Education brings down the complexities in one’s life thereby making life easier, simpler, and comfortable. India is the largest populated country in the world and unfortunately, it is nowhere near in number qualitatively. It may be again due to the huge population and the type of administrative and political system we have. There is stress on cramming, memory, and mugging up. One who mugs up and puts in the examination paper is treated as a meritorious candidate. It does not encourage imagination, creativity, and originality. There is no effective emphasis on practical aspects of life. It is mostly beset with theoretical aspects and concepts, which anyone can read even without going to institutions.

School children are loaded with many books and they find it highly stressful. Education should be filled with entertainment and fun so that students can discover the joy of learning, which is missing now. Children find it horrible to go to school because of too much study. Even at home children engage themselves so much in school homework. Such things do not promote the relations between parent and child at home. Inadequate infrastructure and inexperienced teaching staff are another bane. Unfortunately, in India, both primary and secondary level education is still struggling to survive qualitatively. The views and opinions of the students are not being respected. Students are always imposed on whatever is there in the textbooks resulting in a lack of imagination and innovation. R W Emerson rightly said, “The secret in education lies in respecting the student”. Only when students are respected and valued, they will try to think creatively, innovatively, and out of the box. Students should be provided with more freedom of thought.

Unfortunately, the teachers are not paid handsomely. Best brains are pursuing other careers for monetary benefits and better prospectus. It is a pity that those who stick to the teaching profession either due to their aptitude taste and temperament towards teaching or because there is no other alternative (TINA factor) career.

Teaching faculty must undergo regular training to update and upgrade their skills and abilities. They make money for themselves, pay handsome salaries to their employees, and pay dividends to their shareholders and all the people who are involved in the business are earning one way or the other. But what are they contributing to education and society? It is a well-admitted fact that helping hands are far better than praying lips. Corporations, whether big or small, can wholeheartedly come forward to contribute their best to bring the Indian educational system on par with global standards.

It is essential to bring reforms in education from time to time as the tools and techniques involved in teaching are changing rapidly due to the influence of technology.

For professional qualifications like engineering, management, medicine, computers, etc., the students should be engaged in practical education and project work from the first year itself. Such activities will build more confidence in the minds of the students as they grasp the needs of the industry and thereby fine-tune them as per the industry expectations. In the realm of corporate leadership, particularly in the context of inclusivity, cognitive biases play a pivotal role, often operating subconsciously and influencing decision-making processes. In my conversation with Parul, it became clear how certain cognitive biases, specifically confirmation bias and empathy gap, impact the pursuit of inclusivity in corporate settings. 

Confirmation bias, the tendency to seek, interpret, and remember information that confirms our preconceptions, is a significant hurdle in achieving genuine diversity and inclusivity. This bias often manifests in leadership decisions, where executives may unconsciously favour strategies, ideas, or candidates that align with their existing beliefs or experiences. This bias can create a homogenous leadership, where diverse perspectives are inadvertently filtered out, not due to overt resistance to diversity, but because of the subtle influence of confirmation bias in decision-making.  

For instance, when expanding leadership teams or staffing for global roles, confirmation bias might lead to overlooking candidates who bring diverse perspectives, simply because they do not fit the conventional mould or echo the existing leadership’s viewpoints. This bias can inadvertently maintain the status quo, hindering the integration of truly diverse perspectives that are essential for navigating complex global markets. 

The empathy gap, another critical cognitive bias, refers to the difficulty of understanding others’ feelings, especially when they are in a different emotional or physical state from us. In the context of inclusivity, the empathy gap can lead to misunderstandings or underestimation of the challenges faced by diverse groups within an organisation. It’s key to acknowledge and actively bridge this gap to create an inclusive environment. 

For example, leaders might underestimate the challenges faced by employees from different cultural backgrounds or with different life experiences. This underestimation can lead to policies or corporate cultures that, while well-intentioned, fail to address the unique needs or concerns of various groups within the organisation. To overcome the empathy gap involves encouraging open dialogues, fostering environments where diverse employees feel comfortable sharing their experiences, and actively seeking to understand and address these unique perspectives. 

Recognising and mitigating the effects of these cognitive biases is crucial for leaders who aspire to creating genuinely inclusive workplaces. Strategies include conducting training sessions to raise awareness of these biases, implementing decision-making processes that involve diverse viewpoints to counteract confirmation bias, and creating forums where empathy can be cultivated through shared experiences and open conversations. 

Moreover, we need to use advanced HR analytics as a tool to objectively assess and address these biases. By tracking recruitment patterns, promotion rates, and employee feedback, these analytics help identify areas where biases may be influencing decisions unconsciously.
