US and Ukraine

The United States and Ukraine have agreed to terms on a deal regarding natural resources and post-war reconstruction, a Ukrainian official has confirmed. The agreement comes after contentious negotiations over Ukraine’s rare earth minerals and US financial support for rebuilding the war-torn country.

According to the official, the final text removes “unacceptable” provisions and clarifies how the agreement will “contribute to Ukraine’s security and peace.” However, the US has yet to confirm the deal’s finalization.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to travel to Washington in the coming days, with US President Donald Trump suggesting the two leaders may sign the agreement together on Friday. “I understand that’s a big deal, very big deal,” Trump said from the Oval Office.

Earlier versions of the deal were reportedly rejected by Ukraine, including a US demand for a $500 billion share of Ukraine’s rare earth and mineral resources in exchange for past aid, which Zelensky refused due to a lack of American commitments. Negotiations have since moved forward, with unresolved issues, including security guarantees, likely to be discussed in person.

French President Emmanuel Macron, visiting the White House on Monday, praised Trump for advancing the agreement, calling it “so important for the US and Ukraine on rare earths, critical minerals.”
