Climate Change, Extreme Weather Events and the Future of Humankind

Globally, extreme weather events are becoming more frequent due to a warming planet which is changing climates. While scientifically it is still not possible to say if a specific climatic event was intensified by global warming, and, if so, by how much, the overall trajectory of available scientific evidence during the last two decades is becoming increasingly clear. This includes higher and more frequent floods, severe and longer droughts, hotter heat waves, bigger storm surges and heavier snowfalls. All these extreme hydrometeorological events, especially during the last ten years, seem to be increasingly breaking existing historical records.

If global warming is to be controlled, all countries will have to radically alter their development patterns.

Such extreme hydroclimatic events are now occurring more frequently all over the world. Consider 2021. It started with a record-breaking snowfall in Madrid during the first weeks of the year that resulted in damages costing €1.4 billion. Winter storms in Texas left 3.5 million households without power as the temperature dropped to -13°C. China faced the worst dust storm in a decade, turning Beijing’s sky orange. Serious floods occurred in Germany, Australia, China, India and Indonesia. Extensive forest fires raged in the USA, Canada, France, Greece and Russia, and we experienced soaring unprecedented temperatures in the Pacific Northwest of the USA, Canada and Moscow.

The World Meteorological Organization noted climate change and extreme weather events have contributed to a major surge in natural disasters over the last 50 years. There were more than 11,000 such reported disasters globally, resulting in over two million deaths and $3.64 trillion losses. More than 91% of the deaths were in developing countries. This meant, during this 50-year period, average losses were $202 million each day. What is frightening is losses during 2010-19 were seven times those reported in 1970-79.

The Sixth Assessment Report of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, released in August, concluded unequivocally that “human influence has warmed the atmosphere, ocean and land”. It concludes that global surface temperature will continue to increase at least until 2056 “under all emission scenarios”.

A UN report released this year analysed the latest emissions reduction promises of 191 countries and concluded that these would propel the world to a “catastrophic” 2.7°C increase°above pre-industrial temperatures, by 2100. This is above the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement of l.5 C. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called this situation a “code red for humanity.”

Water security and climate change

Impacts of climate change will be mostly felt, directly or indirectly, through the medium of water. Floods and droughts happen because either there is too much or too little rainfall. Global warming

heats the ocean water causing it to expand and it melts polar ice caps, both contributing to increases in sea level. Steady melting of inland glaciers may increase river flows. However, when glaciers fully melt a major source of river flows will disappear. Flows, subsequently, will decline. Forest fires require dry periods so that under-brushes are dry; thus, fires spread quickly and become difficult to control. Extinguishing forest fires requires a tremendous amount of water.

More heatwaves and warmer temperatures mean increasing need for air conditioning and fans, requiring more electricity. Generating electricity by thermal and nuclear means more water will be necessary for cooling.

While water is an essential consideration for adaptation or mitigating impacts ofclimate change, there is a fundamental discontent between climatologists and water professionals on how they approach climate change. Climatologists have been primarily preoccupied by averages, i.e. how average global temperature may increase or what will be the average rise of mean sea level.

In contrast, water professionals are not interested in averages but in extreme hydrological events like prolonged droughts and high floods that may occur once every 100-500 years. This is because the water infrastructures are designed on the basis of recurrences of extreme hydrological events. This disconnect may have major consequences in the future.

Complexities of managing climate change impact

Managing climate change is a multidimensional and complex issue. The problem has to be tackled globally and by all countries. Reduction of emissions depends on numerous factors, including growth and structure of the population, urbanization, national and global economic growth rates, poverty alleviation, global increase of middle class and their aspirations and dietary patterns, speed and success of energy transition from fossil fuels to other sustainable forms of energy and a host of other associated factors.

If global warming is to be controlled, all countries will have to radically alter their development patterns. Politically and socially, this is a very difficult task.

Future of humankind

Humankind has a common future. We survive or perish together, North and South, East and West.

All major issues facing humankind are interrelated. The dynamics of our future will be determined not by any single issue like climate change, but by the interactions of a multitude of issues.

Increasing population and urbanisation mean more food, energy, water and raw materials is required by an increasingly concentrated population. Common requirements linking all practical responses to the solution of these major problems must include greater investments, higher production, a continuous strive for efficiencies, use of more technology and expertise and intensified global cooperation.

Interrelationships are global, and they can be best understood and resolved within a global framework. While the framework may be global, within this there has to be a wide variety ofcoordinated national and regional responses.

Humankind has a common future. We survive or perish together, North and South, East and West. Should we ignore this salutary exhortation, we should heed the warning of William Shakespeare: “Men at some times are masters of their fates. The fault … is not in our stars, but in ourselves, that we are underlining.”

Ukraine Conflict Puts Organisations’ Cyber-Resilience to the Test

Julia O’Toole, founder and CEO of MyCena Security Solutions, comments on how historic cyberattacks have given the Russian government critical advantages in the build-up to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In anticipation of escalating cyberattacks, organisations should take immediate action to secure cyber-resilience.

The invasion of Ukraine is the culmination of years of careful preparation from the Russian state. Strategic cyber-advantages were gained in several areas, convincing them of their own cyber-supremacy.

Cyber-advantage one: Cyberwar practice runs

The Russian military has been testing and perfecting cyberwar techniques for years, not least against their Ukrainian neighbour, of which the most devastating was the NotPetya cyber-attack. This was directed against Ukraine’s financial, energy and government institutions in June 2017 but also indirectly affected many other businesses, causing hundreds of millions of pounds in losses.[1]

This attack highlighted the risk associated with having their own country’s digital infrastructure connected to the world. Consequently, Russia created its own internet network that can be disconnected from the rest of the world when needed. This was tested in June and July 2021 and again in January 2022, a few days after a dozen Ukrainian government websites were hit by a data wiper attack disguised as ransomware.[2]

Cyber-advantage two: Financial gains through ransomware

According to a report by Chainanalysis, nearly three-quarters of traceable ransomware revenue in 2021 (around $400 million worth of cryptocurrency) was laundered through Russia. Meaning that cyber-insurers could well have unknowingly propped up Russian military coffers.[3]

Cyber-advantage three: Deep penetration into western governments’ digital infrastructure

A recent string of high profile cyberattacks and vulnerabilities, including the SolarWinds attack and the log4j vulnerabilities, has enabled Russian cybercriminals to scan, steal and crucially stay inside organisations. According to O’Toole, “the SolarWinds attack reportedly gave Russia access to data from about 100 U.S. government agencies, critical infrastructure entities, and private sector organizations[4].”

“Expect more cyberattacks”

UK Home Secretary, Priti Patel has issued clear warnings that “as this crisis develops” the Government expects to see “cyber-attacks aimed at the West”. And Lindy Cameron, chief executive of GCHQ’s National Cyber Security Centre, has said: “In a world that is so dependent on digital assets, cyber resilience is more important than ever…The UK is closer to the crisis in Ukraine than you might think… If the situation continues to escalate, we could see cyber-attacks that have international consequences, intentional or not.”

“Lindy Cameron is correct to urge businesses and organisations to take steps to improve and increase their cyber resilience,” says O’Toole. “In the current cyberwar, a cyber-resilience strategy is more urgent and necessary than ever. The question is how?”

“Hackers don’t need to hack in, they log in.”

“Russia has gained its cyber-advantages fundamentally through the inherently weak digital access models deployed by organisations today. We know that nine out of ten attacks involve legitimate passwords, with password phishing responsible for 83 per cent of all cyberattacks in 2021.

“People changing their passwords from DomSmith123! to Dom$mith1234 after a cyberattack will not stop a malicious actor from logging in again!”

Protect network access and ensure cyber-resilience

But it is not too late to protect your network access and secure cyber-resilience. According to O’Toole, organisations can quickly organise themselves to take back command and control of their digital network, stop passwords phishing and prevent ransomware attacks. Starting with applying physical security rules to their cybersecurity:

Don’t let employees make and share their own (digital) keys. To ensure passwords can’t be seen, shared, or phished by anyone, they can be encrypted from end-to-end (creation, distribution, use, expiry).
Don’t put all systems behind a single door with one key to open everything. To ensure (cyber) resilience, segment access to every system so that if one is breached, for example in a supply chain attack, the breach is isolated by default and won’t affect other systems.

From protecting networks to deceptive intelligence

O’Toole continues, “Intelligence has always been a key advantage in war. So has deceptive intelligence. By breaking the ENIGMA code, Alan Turing and the team at Bletchley Park helped the allies intercept the Nazis’ encrypted communications, create false information to then be intercepted by their opponents, and consequently shortened the war. Imagine today if organisations leveraged the rise in phishing attacks to deceive criminals with false information about their intentions and positions. Simultaneously, access from legitimate users would be protected with end-to-end encrypted passwords that can’t be seen, shared or phished. These organisations would be immune to passwords attacks, ensuring the integrity of their network and confusing their opponents in the process.”

Stop ransomware and stop funding the war

“From a financial standpoint, removing selected Russian banks from the SWIFT system and freezing their central bank assets will have a massive impact on Russia’s ability to sustain its aggression. Through preventing ransomware attacks, organisations could also prevent cryptocurrency theft from offsetting the financial sanctions and shorten the war,” O’Toole concludes.

Is this the Start of Liverpool Domination?

Liverpool have finally won a domestic cup under Jurgen Klopp. It feels like it has been a long time coming but at the same time they have won nearly everything else from the Premier League to the Club World Cup. However, this does feel different winning the League Cup and being very much in the race for all three other available competitions.

The question remains now, can Liverpool complete a previously unheard of English quadruple?

Why the excitement?

It is often the case that if you win the League Cup in February and you are still in the other competitions there will be talk of the treble or even the quadruple. People often look at new betting offers sign ups to get the best odds on a quadruple or a treble for that club.

However, this is not seen as the traditional treble and they will want prove they can do that this season especially with rivals Manchester United the only English winners of the traditional treble in 1998/99.

Why have Liverpool not challenged more for a treble?

When Liverpool achieved the Premier League win in 2019/20 it was huge relief for them. It was also one they had been building towards ever since Jurgen Klopp arrived at the club. There had been missed opportunities in the League Cup final, Europa League final and the Champions League final but these were seen as learning curves more than mediocre attempts in other seasons.

The main problem that Liverpool have had with achieving dominance is their performances in the FA Cup. Under Klopp they have not got further than the fifth round, the current stage they are at now. Klopp has been accused of not taking the FA Cup seriously but he has denied this accusation. However, he does have the squad to compete alongside Manchester City on all fronts and they have made a minimum of the semifinals in the past three seasons.

If Klopp can get past Norwich this week then Liverpool could be set for a historical season.

How are they performing?

With the League Cup already in the bag and Norwich in the next round of the FA Cup they also have to focus on two other fronts. In recent weeks they have been unbeatable in the League as they have not lost since they played Leicester on 28^th Dec and are closing in on Manchester City who are six points clear but played one extra game.

Liverpool are among the favourites for the Champions League and hold a 2-0 advantage over Inter Milan going into the 2^nd leg at Anfield.

Is the team capable?

There is nothing really stopping Liverpool. They are looking really strong now especially with the return of Virgil Van Dijk at the heart of the defence. He has solidified them once again after his knee injury and has been like a new signing after a tough season last year despite finishing 3^rd.

There was also question marks over the famous front three if they could continue to be so prolific but they have done especially Sadio Mane and Mohammed Salah. Both are up there with the best players in the world and are ruthless in front of goal for Liverpool as was proved against Leeds in the 6-0 drubbing.

This is where the backup brigade have also helped. Diogo Jota, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and new signing Luis Diaz are just a few of the players who have stepped up when called upon to help Liverpool on this journey to potential quadruple bliss.

Liverpool are capable and they are going to have to keep this form as they enter the closing stages of the season. Relegation threated teams will be more up for it, competitions will become fiercer and fatigue may kick in but Liverpool could be the first English club to win the quadruple.

Will the Russians Turn to Cryptocurrency?

The situation in Ukraine has escalated massively over the past week and there is real condemnation from the rest of the world to the aggression from Russia. The invasion from Vladimir Putin has sparked outcry with many countries placing big sanctions on Russia meaning they are unable to participate in sporting events, trade with other nations and financial companies putting blocks on Russian companies.

The world is reacting to the news and saying that the unnecessary attack from Russia is not one that can go unpunished. The sanctions are not stopping and they will not stop whilst there is fighting in Ukraine or even in other countries from Russian attackers.

So with these sanctions in place it will affect Russia financially. The rest of the world will feel restrictions with oil and gas predominantly coming from Russia but it will be Russian people that will feel the most of these restrictions especially in terms of their money.

The US, EU and their allies have agreed to cut Russia from the central banking system Swift that the Russians rely on heavily for making payments for products such as oil and gas; exporting. It is a move to further isolate Russia and make them known that the aggression they are displaying is not one that the west supports.

Money in Russia

Before the invasion of Ukraine, Russia was at the forefront of using digital payments especially products such as Google Pay and Apple Pay. However, now they have been cut from using these systems all together and people are fearful that they could lose their money if these sanctions continue. There has already been long queues at ATMs with people wanting to withdraw their money so they physically have it with them.

The Central Bank has stated that card payments will still work for transactions but people are not fully convinced with more and more countries going against Russia and not wanting to deal with Putin in any sort of way just like Visa and Mastercard who are all for the sanctions in place and even donated money to the Ukrainian situation for humanitarian aid.

The bank of Russia also released a statement saying, “External conditions for the Russian economy have changed dramatically. An increase in the key rate will make it possible to ensure an increase in deposit rates to the levels necessary to compensate for the increased devaluation and inflation risks. This will help maintain financial and price stability and protect citizens’ savings from depreciation.”

The US has placed Russia’s top 10 financial institutions, representing about 80% of the country’s banking sector, under restrictions, including cutting off the biggest Sberbank. The EU, US, UK and Canada have agreed to prevent the Russian central bank from deploying its €640bn (£540bn) of international reserves “in ways that undermine the impact of our sanctions”.

So what is the plan for the Russian government now in terms of money? With so many sanctions and uncertainty over the Ruble, which has dropped dramatically, it has been suggested that Russia will turn to cryptocurrency as a way of moving around the sanctions that have been placed on them.

It is reported that Bitcoin purchases using Rubles and Hryvnias soared as Russia imposed sanctions on its citizens.

Being able to transact value in Bitcoin also helps Russian oligarchs go around the Western sanctions. It may also help Russian companies and even the Russian central bank to move funds as these entities can no longer access US dollars, and most of the Russian banks are no longer part of the SWIFT system.

If there is no policy response from the West to the Bitcoin adoption from Russia, the positive trend could further develop and make Bitcoin the number one safe haven asset in the war setup.”
