The AI Edge in Assessing Geopolitical Risk: Opportunities and Challenges

By Joshua Haecker and Fallon Farmer

In the past year, multinationals have rushed to leverage generative AI to get a better grasp of geopolitical risks they face around the world. Amid mounting emerging market instability, security crises, sanctions regimes and trade wars, generative AI offers significant potential for companies’ risk and intelligence teams.

However, by moving so quickly, some have not properly considered the limitations of the data-synthesising technology – an oversight that can lead to flawed operational decisions. The haste with which the technology is being deployed as a forecasting tool has left some firms with models whose responses to questions may be inaccurate. This, in many cases, is because the AI has not had access to sufficiently comprehensive and balanced data sets, nor been trained to learn from and interpret these sources.

Put simply, the models sometimes do not have the knowledge or the skills to answer the questions they are being asked. Consequently, the answers they do provide can be misleading or erroneous. That, in turn, can lead to bad corporate decision-making, for example to pull out of a market or stand down a security team, when there’s no compelling reason to do so.

The challenges of using AI as a means of helping companies assess security risks are particularly evident when operating in potentially volatile jurisdictions. Below, we illustrate this with hypothetical examples of corporate risk assessment in the run-up to the Israel-Hamas and the Ukraine-Russian wars, where there were few signs of imminent conflict.

In September of last year, a multinational considering expanding its operations in southern Israel may have asked its generative AI model to assess the likelihood of an escalation of tensions between Hamas and Israel. The organisation has periodically launched rocket attacks from its base in Gaza against Israeli urban centres. These have triggered reprisal strikes. The exchanges have often quickly spiralled into highly disruptive security crises.

In the weeks before the October 7 Hamas raid into southern Israel, there would not have been much, if any, open-source information warning of such an operation. Hamas’s actions caught observers by surprise. So, based on the data available, an AI model might have said there were no indications of a possible escalation. A human analyst, however, would likely have provided a more cautious response. They might have suggested that the situation was unclear because of the lack of data on security conditions in the region and Hamas’s intent.

Prior to the outbreak of the Ukraine war on February 24, 2022, there was a massive build-up of Russian forces near the Ukrainian frontier with Russia. Yet most observers took the view that Moscow was not about to invade but was instead trying to exert pressure on Kyiv to make political concessions. Views changed when the US, drawing on its own intelligence, warned an invasion was imminent.

Before that warning, a generative AI model asked to assess escalating tensions may have suggested the country was not under immediate threat. A human analyst’s response would likely have been more caveated, perhaps drawing on a wider range of sources. Some of these might have given more weight to the possibility of an invasion.

FiscalNote has been researching and experimenting with generative AI models, exploring their limitations, and developing ways of mitigating them. Our work has shown that companies can use prompting techniques to prime the models and better prepare them for the tasks they perform or the answers they produce. In essence, it means teaching the model that ‘this is what I mean when I ask you to do a certain task’.

Through our work, we’ve identified five key steps (outlined below) that companies can take to craft effective AI models that generate accurate and actionable outputs. This will help organisations navigate and respond to the dynamic challenges of today’s business environment, maximizing the benefits of AI technologies while mitigating potential pitfalls.

Picking a rich and robust set of training data. The data sets used to train AI models should be as comprehensive, timely and authoritative as possible. If there are gaps or omissions in the sources, then answers generated may be flawed, no matter how much effort is made to improve the programme’s synthesising capabilities.

Prompting with task-specific instructions. As much as possible, AI should be trained to answer critical questions following the same processes and techniques as their human counterparts – for example, to cite sources on which its answers are based. Essentially, this amounts to explaining how it came to its conclusions. If not required to tie them back to source documents, there is a risk of the model making up answers.

Permitting responses with no answers. Generative AI is hard-wired to provide an answer to a question, regardless of whether it has the correct answer or not. This can be avoided by including fallback options when instructing a model. So, where there isn’t the data to support an accurate response to a question, the model is allowed to say, “I don’t know”, “I don’t have enough information to answer”, or ” I can’t help with that”.

Making sure responses are objective and balanced. Companies can also use generative AI to self-check for potential bias in answers. This becomes particularly important, for example, in responding to questions related to conflicts where the positions of the parties involved are unequally represented in data sources. Once sensitive to bias, the model can confirm whether the parties are being presented fairly in its responses; identify when that’s not happening; and determine if this is due to insufficient data.

Designing an option for human input.  AI systems should be deployed with a human-in-the-loop design, which effectively recognises when a question should be escalated to a human analyst. The escalation may be triggered by answers that generate high rates of bias, “don’t knows”, or questionable source citations. The human analyst then draws on their own expertise and knowledge, which might include taking into consideration subjective and intangible factors beyond the scope of an AI model.

As geopolitical threats multiply around the world, companies are right to consider using AI models to assist them with critical operational decisions. These programmes can certainly inform and enhance risk assessment, but to be truly effective they must be trained and have access to optimal data sets. Even then, they may not have all the answers. So, it is imperative that they work in tandem with human analysts, not replace them. If well-managed, the technology is a real asset. If not, it can be a liability.

Enhancing Security with Remote Guarding Solutions

In an era marked by technological advancements, businesses are increasingly turning to innovative solutions to address security concerns and improve their bottom line.

One such solution that has gained widespread recognition is video monitoring and remote guarding. By leveraging the capabilities of surveillance cameras, businesses can not only detect criminal activities, but prevent them from happening and enjoy a number of additional benefits that positively impact their overall performance.

What is Remote Guarding?

Eyeforce, a Becklar company, specializes in advanced video surveillance systems.

Remote Guarding is a dependable security solution that has many benefits. This advanced system eliminates human error factors such as fatigue and lapses in patrol duties during rest breaks. Operating 24/7, remote guarding remains vigilant and on guard at all times.

How Does It Work?

The command and control center personnel actively track and monitor premises using real-time video feeds transmitted by video cameras. Leveraging technology employed by the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security for surveillance and monitoring, this system ensures the best possible security.

Through proactive systems integration, the Eyeforce remote guard and patrol system takes a preventative approach to crime. Video feeds are transmitted in real-time with an event-focused interactive strategy, allowing intruders to be warned before any criminal activity occurs. Choosing to invest in cutting-edge security that goes beyond traditional measures is a smart decision to safeguard your assets effectively.

The Benefits of Remote Guarding Solutions

Preventing Crime Through Surveillance

Video monitoring through Remote Guarding serves as a powerful deterrent to criminal activities.

The presence of visible cameras can significantly reduce the likelihood of theft, vandalism, and other illicit behaviors. Criminals are less likely to target a facility when they know their actions are being recorded, as the risk of identification and apprehension increases.

In addition to camera visibility, remote guarding services provide real-time observation of premises and engagement, enabling a swift response to potential security threats. Advanced analytics and artificial intelligence algorithms can detect unusual activities or suspicious behaviors, triggering immediate alerts for security personnel.

Remote guards are able to engage in real-time. There isn’t a prerecorded message that is played when someone attempts illegal entry. There is a live operator who can speak in real-time to divert criminal activity. This proactive approach ensures that security measures can be deployed promptly, preventing crimes before they happen.

Cost Savings with Video Monitoring and Remote Guarding

There are many cost saving opportunities that come with video monitoring and remote guarding services by Eyeforce.

First, let’s look at reducing losses, and the natural expenses associated with theft and vandalism. For businesses, minimizing these losses is essential. Costs associated with theft or vandalism can be reduced through real-time remote guard engagement that deters crime. It also improves emergency services response time when necessary. Reducing or eliminating the expenses associated with crime provides a huge boost to an organization’s bottom line.

Another form of savings from video monitoring and remote guarding is the potential savings on personnel costs. Having live security guards on-site, around the clock, can be extremely costly. The remote video guarding system could effectively monitor an entire property at a fraction of the cost in many scenarios. Hiring security guards requires expenses for recruitment, training, and possibly providing uniforms and equipment. Ongoing costs include salaries, benefits, and other employment-related expenses, and more.

Another savings opportunity comes from being able to identify false alarm signals and reducing false emergency dispatches. With video monitoring and remote guarding, alarms can be verified before dispatching security or emergency response teams. This feature significantly enhances the effectiveness of security systems, and brings potential savings to organizations.

Surveillance footage can also be valuable in legal matters and reducing liability. In the event of accidents, disputes, or liability claims, having a comprehensive record of events can be crucial for defending the business against false accusations and mitigating potential legal expenses.

Improve Security with Remote Guarding Today

Eyeforce’s Remote Guarding is much more than simply a security tool; it’s a strategic investment that can positively impact a business’s bottom line as discussed above.

By effectively deterring criminal activities and reducing losses and liabilities associated with theft and vandalism, businesses can create a safer and more secure environment while simultaneously enhancing their bottom line. As technology continues to evolve, video monitoring and remote guarding will play an increasingly pivotal role in safeguarding businesses and fostering a more profitable future.

Sleep Apnea and Jaw Problems: Understanding the Role of Jaw Surgery

Sleep apnea, a disorder characterized by interrupted breathing during sleep, is a condition that affects millions worldwide. While its association with respiratory issues is well-known, the link between sleep apnea and jaw problems is an emerging area of study. This article explores the intricate connection between sleep apnea and jaw issues, shedding light on the role of jaw surgery in managing these conditions.

Understanding Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea comes in various forms, with the two most prevalent being obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and central sleep apnea. OSA occurs when the muscles at the back of the throat relax excessively, leading to a blockage in the airway. Central sleep apnea, on the other hand, results from a failure of the brain to send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing. Both types can have severe consequences for one’s health, ranging from daytime fatigue to cardiovascular problems.

The Link with Jaw Problems

The connection between sleep apnea and jaw problems lies in the anatomy of the upper airway. The position and alignment of the jaw, tongue, and soft tissues in the throat play a crucial role in maintaining an open airway during sleep. Individuals with jaw problems, such as a misaligned jaw or a small lower jaw, may be more prone to developing sleep apnea. These anatomical issues can contribute to airway obstruction, especially when the muscles relax during sleep.

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders and Sleep Apnea

One specific aspect of jaw problems that researchers have been investigating is the association between sleep apnea and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. The TMJ is a hinge joint that connects the jawbone to the skull, facilitating actions like chewing and talking. Dysfunction in the TMJ can lead to pain, clicking sounds, and difficulty in jaw movement.

Studies have suggested that individuals with TMJ disorders may have a higher risk of developing sleep apnea. The relationship between the two conditions is complex, with TMJ problems potentially contributing to airway compromise during sleep. Conversely, untreated sleep apnea can exacerbate TMJ symptoms due to the increased clenching and grinding of teeth often associated with the disorder.

Jaw Surgery as a Treatment Option

When conservative measures such as lifestyle changes, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, or dental devices prove insufficient, jaw surgery becomes a viable option for managing sleep apnea related to jaw problems. Orthognathic surgery, a type of jaw surgery, aims to reposition the upper and/or lower jaw to enhance the airway and alleviate breathing difficulties during sleep.

The decision to undergo jaw surgery for sleep apnea is not taken lightly. It involves a comprehensive assessment by a multidisciplinary team, including sleep specialists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, and orthodontists. Candidates for jaw surgery typically have specific anatomical issues contributing to their sleep apnea that can be effectively addressed through surgical intervention.

Indications for Jaw Surgery

  1. Anatomical Abnormalities: Individuals with structural abnormalities such as a retruded lower jaw (mandible) or a narrow upper jaw (maxilla) may benefit from jaw surgery to reposition the bones and improve the airway.
  2. Failure of Conservative Treatments: When other treatments, such as CPAP therapy or dental appliances, have proven ineffective or intolerable, jaw surgery may be considered as a more permanent solution.
  3. Severe Sleep Apnea: In cases where sleep apnea is severe and poses significant health risks, jaw surgery may be recommended to address the underlying anatomical issues.

Conclusion

The intricate connection between sleep apnea and jaw problems underscores the importance of a holistic approach in managing these conditions. While jaw surgery is a potential solution for some individuals, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare team to determine the most appropriate course of action. As research in this field continues to evolve, a better understanding of the relationship between sleep apnea and jaw problems will contribute to more effective and personalized treatment strategies for those affected by these conditions.

Why You Need an Insurance Broker on Your Side

Imagine exploring a dense forest with a complex network of paths; that’s what dealing with insurance can feel like. You’re faced with a myriad of options, terms, and conditions that can easily overwhelm you. That’s where an insurance broker steps in, acting like a seasoned guide through this intricate terrain.

But why would you need such a guide? What’s their role? And how do they save you time, money, and unnecessary stress? Stick around, and you’ll discover the indispensable value of having an insurance broker on your side.

Understanding the Role of an Insurance Broker

Delving into the complex realm of insurance can be challenging, but grasping the role of an insurance broker can greatly simplify the process for you. So, who’s an insurance broker? They’re skilled professionals who act as intermediaries between insurance companies and you, the client. Their primary role is to assist you in finding the most suitable insurance policy that fits your needs and budget.

Unlike insurance agents who represent the interests of insurance companies, brokers work for you. They’re independent, giving them the freedom to explore and compare offerings from various insurance companies. This means they’re not tied to a single insurer but have your best interests at heart.

Insurance brokers are particularly beneficial when it comes to complex policies. They can interpret the fine print, explain terms, conditions, and coverages in an understandable manner, and guide you in making informed decisions. They’ll also handle the administrative tasks such as managing renewals and making claims, saving you time and hassle.

Implicitly, insurance brokers act as your personal advisor in the insurance world. They simplify the complicated, make your life easier, and help you secure the best insurance coverage. It’s a win-win situation for you.

The Expertise of an Insurance Broker

Delving into the insurance landscape requires a wealth of knowledge, and that’s where the expertise of an insurance broker truly shines. They’re not just salespeople; they’re seasoned professionals with extensive industry experience. Their expertise spans the breadth and depth of the insurance market, understanding the complexities of various policies, terms, and conditions.

The insurance broker’s expertise extends beyond just knowledge of policies. They’re also skilled negotiators, which can be invaluable when the time comes to make a claim. They’ll fight your corner, ensuring you get the best possible outcome from any disputes.

Moreover, an insurance broker’s expertise is underpinned by a legal obligation to act in your best interest. This isn’t just about selling you a policy; it’s about matching your unique needs with the right coverage. They’re committed to providing you with the best advice, tailored to your personal or business circumstances.

In the maze of insurance options, having an insurance broker on your side is like having a personal guide. Their expertise illuminates the path, making sure you’re not left in the dark. It’s clear, then, that the expertise of an insurance broker is an invaluable tool in your insurance journey.

How Insurance Brokers Save You Time

In addition to their expertise, insurance brokers can also save you valuable time, simplifying the search for the right insurance policy to meet your needs. They’re like your personal insurance investigators, diligently combing through a massive array of policies to find the one that matches your requirements.

Exploring the insurance world can be time-consuming and complex, especially when you’re not familiar with the jargon. That’s where brokers come in. They cut through the noise, streamlining the process by doing the legwork for you. Instead of you spending hours researching, comparing quotes, and interpreting policy terms, they do it all on your behalf.

Additionally, they’ve access to a broad network of insurance providers. They can quickly gather and compare quotes, saving you the hassle. And the best part? They’re always up-to-date on the latest insurance trends and changes in regulations, ensuring you’re not caught off-guard.

Tailored Policies and Personalized Service

Beyond saving you time, insurance brokers offer the value of insurance brokers the benefit of crafting tailored policies and providing personalized service, making certain you get coverage that’s truly fitted to your unique needs. They aren’t tied to one specific insurance company, so they can explore a wider range of policies from various providers to find the one that suits you best. You aren’t just a number to them; they’ll take the time to understand your individual circumstances and risks, which allows them to tailor a policy that provides the coverage you need without unnecessary extras.

Additionally, this personalized service extends beyond policy selection. Your broker will also be your advocate during the claims process, helping to make certain it’s handled correctly and efficiently. They’ll be there to answer your questions, explain your policy’s intricacies, and provide advice when you need it most.

The Cost-effectiveness of Using a Broker

While the personalized service and customized policies offered by insurance brokers are invaluable, you’ll also appreciate the cost-effectiveness that comes with utilizing their expertise. Remember, insurance brokers work for you, not insurance companies. Their role is to help you navigate the complex insurance market, ensuring you get the best coverage for your needs at the most competitive price.

An insurance broker’s understanding of the industry and access to several insurance providers can save you both time and money. Instead of comparing policy terms and rates yourself, your broker does the legwork, presenting you with the best options. They’re able to negotiate on your behalf, often securing deals and discounts not readily available to individual customers.

Moreover, the involvement of a broker can reduce costly mistakes. They’ll guide you in identifying the right coverage and avoiding unnecessary extras. In the event of a claim, your broker is there to assist, ensuring a smooth, efficient process which can lead to quicker payouts.

The Mediation Advantage of Insurance Brokers

Ever wondered how an insurance broker can help resolve disputes between you and your insurance provider? Well, let’s shed some light on that. One of the most significant benefits of hiring a broker is their ability to mediate on your behalf. They’re not just there to sell you a policy, but also to make sure you’re treated fairly by the insurer.

When disputes arise, it’s often challenging to negotiate with insurance companies. They’ve vast resources and legal teams that can be intimidating to go up against. But, with an insurance broker at your side, you don’t have to face these challenges alone. They’ll represent your interests, leveraging their industry knowledge and relationships to negotiate on your behalf.

What’s more, insurance brokers can help speed up claims resolution. They understand the complexities of the insurance industry, making them an invaluable ally in maneuvering its twists and turns.

In summary, an insurance broker doesn’t just find you the best policy, but also provides mediation services, making sure your voice is heard and your rights are protected. So, don’t underestimate their worth. They’re indeed a valuable asset in your insurance journey.

Staying Updated With Policy Changes

In the ever-evolving world of insurance, staying on top of policy changes isn’t just a good idea, it’s essential for protecting your interests. Having an insurance broker on your side guarantees you’re always abreast with these changes.

So, why is it critical to be updated? Let’s consider the following reasons:

  1. Policy alterations: Insurers often revise their policies frequently. You might miss an essential update if you’re not vigilant. But, with a broker, they’ll make sure you’re informed of any changes.
  2. Regulatory changes: Laws and regulations governing insurance are dynamic. Your broker will keep you updated on these changes to make sure your policy remains compliant.
  3. Market trends: Insurance brokers are well-versed with market trends. They can guide you on how these trends might affect your policy or premium.
  4. Risk evaluation: Insurance brokers continually assess your risk profile. If there’s any change, they’ll suggest modifications to your policy accordingly, guaranteeing effective coverage.

Having an insurance broker means you’re never in the dark. They’ll keep you informed, ensuring your policy remains effective and beneficial, so you can focus on what matters most – your life and business.

Long-term Relationship and Policy Management

Establishing a long-term relationship with your insurance broker not only simplifies policy management but also guarantees consistent coverage tailored to your specific needs. Having a familiar face who fully understands your life’s complexities and risks can be invaluable. They’ll be able to tailor your policies over time as your circumstances change, providing you with the most suitable coverage.

Imagine you’re starting a family, buying a new property, or launching a business. Your broker can adjust your policies accordingly, ensuring you’re adequately protected at all times. This isn’t a one-time transaction; it’s a lifetime partnership. Your broker acts as your advocate, your guide, and your protector in the complex world of insurance.

What’s more, having a dedicated broker means you’ve got someone on your side when it’s time to make a claim. They’ll fight for your interests, ensuring you receive a fair and prompt settlement. Your broker will also keep you updated with any policy changes, helping you avoid potential pitfalls or gaps in your coverage.

How Do Slots Work: Rules and Beginner’s Guide

Slots are popular in land-based casinos and online. They are fun games with a chance to win real money. Here’s how they work: When you play a slot machine, you see a bunch of symbols on the screen. The game randomly mixes these symbols every time you press the button or pull a lever, and if they line up in a certain way, you win!

This ensures that each spin is completely independent and has an equal chance of winning, with outcomes not influenced by previous results.

Modern slots also feature various paylines, sometimes over 100, offering multiple ways to win. They come with a predetermined Return to Player (RTP) rate, typically 92% to 98%, indicating the percentage of wagered money paid back to players over time.

Playing slots is easy to start because you don’t need to learn many rules. Pick a game, decide how much money you want to bet, and press the spin button. Remember, it’s all about luck, so have fun and gamble responsibly.

Is There A Trick To Playing Slots?

Playing slots, whether in land-based or online slots, largely relies on luck due to the Random Number Generator (RNG) used in these machines. The RNG ensures that each spin’s outcome is random and independent of previous or future spins. However, due to this inherent randomness, no tricks can guarantee wins.

Despite this, there are strategies and best practices that can help optimize your playing experience:

  • Understand the Game: Familiarize yourself with the slot’s paytable, symbols, and bonus features to know how wins are determined.
  • Choose Slots with Higher RTP: Look for slots with a high Return to Player (RTP) percentage, usually above 95%, as they theoretically offer better payout rates over time.
  • Manage Your Bankroll: Set a budget for your gaming session and stick to it to avoid overspending.
  • Play for Fun: Remember that slots are games of chance designed for entertainment. Keeping expectations realistic helps maintain a healthy approach to gambling.
  • Use Casino Bonuses Wisely: Many casinos offer bonuses that can extend playtime or increase your bankroll. Be sure to read the terms and conditions for wagering requirements.

How Do You Win A Slot Game?

Winning at slot games is primarily based on luck, given the role of Random Number Generators (RNGs) in determining the outcomes. However, you can employ certain strategies to potentially enhance your chances of winning or to maximize your gameplay experience:

  • Choose Slots with Higher RTP: Look for slot games with a high Return to Player (RTP) percentage, ideally above 95%. A higher RTP means the game is designed to return a higher rate of the wagered money to players over time, compared to slots with a lower RTP.
  • Understand the Slot’s Volatility: Volatility (or variance) refers to how often to play online slots and win big and how much a slot pays out. High-volatility slots offer larger payouts but less frequently, while low-volatility slots pay out smaller amounts more often. Choose according to your risk tolerance and playing style.
  • Manage Your Bankroll: Set a budget for your gaming session and stick to it. Decide how much you’re willing to spend and avoid chasing losses.
  • Take Advantage of Bonuses: Many online casinos offer bonuses like free spins or deposit matches that can extend your playtime without requiring additional investment from your pocket. Ensure you read the terms and conditions, especially the wagering requirements.
  • Play the Maximum Bet on Progressive Slots: If you’re playing progressive slots and aiming for the jackpot, you often need to play the maximum bet to be eligible. Make sure you understand the game’s rules regarding jackpot qualification.
  • Practice with Free Games: If you’re new to slots or trying out a new game, start with free or demo versions. This lets you get familiar with the game mechanics and features without risking your money.
  • Know When to Stop: Set a win limit and a loss limit. If you’re fortunate enough to win, know when to cash out and enjoy your winnings rather than reinvesting all back into the game.

How Do Slot Machines Work?

Slot machines, both physical and online, are fascinating for their gameplay and the numbers that drive their operation and appeal. Here are some numerical facts about slots that highlight their mechanics, popularity, and impact:

  • Random Number Generator (RNG): The RNG in a slot machine generates thousands of random numbers every second, each associated with a different combination of symbols. When you press the spin button, the RNG selects a number for that exact moment, determining the spin’s outcome.
  • Return to Player (RTP): RTP percentages typically range from 92% to 98%. This means a slot machine will pay back 92-98% of the total money wagered over a long period. For example, a slot with a 95% RTP will return $95 for every $100 wagered over time.
  • Volatility: Slot games can be classified by their volatility, which affects how winnings are distributed. High-volatility slots might have a hit frequency (the rate of winning spins) as low as 10%, meaning only about 10% of spins will result in a win, but with potentially higher payouts. Low-volatility slots might have a hit frequency of over 30%, indicating more frequent but smaller wins.
  • Paylines: Modern slots can have a wide range of paylines, from 1 to over 1,000. Traditional 3-reel slots typically offer a single payline, while 5-reel video slots commonly feature 20, 25, 50, or more paylines. Some games, using a “ways to win” format, offer up to 243, 1024, or 3125 ways to win on a single spin.
  • Jackpots: Progressive jackpot slots accumulate a portion of each bet across a network of machines or games, leading to jackpots reaching millions. As of my last update, the largest online slot jackpot win was over $20 million, and it was won on Microgaming’s Mega Moolah slot.
  • Slot Machine Numbers: It’s estimated that there are over 2 million physical slot machines in casinos worldwide. Online slots, however, are innumerable, with new titles being developed and released regularly by various software providers.
  • Betting Options: Slot machines offer a wide range of betting options, with minimum bets as low as one cent and maximum bets that can go up to hundreds of dollars per spin. This caters to both casual players and high rollers.
  • Bonuses and Free Spins: Online slots often feature bonus rounds that can significantly multiply winnings. The number of free spins or the multiplier effect varies greatly across games. Still, it’s common to find offers of 10 to 50 free spins or multipliers that double or triple winnings.

Conclusion: Is It Possible To Win At Online Slot Consistently?

Winning consistently at online slots is inherently challenging due to the Random Number Generators (RNGs) that ensure outcomes are random and independent. This randomness precludes any strategy for guaranteed wins, emphasizing luck over skill.

Understanding slots’ RTP (Return to Player) percentages, volatility, and paylines can guide better choices. Selecting higher RTP slots and managing bankrolls wisely are recommended strategies. Utilizing bonuses can also extend gameplay and improve winning chances without extra cost.

Slots’ appeal includes their unpredictability and potential for significant jackpots, underscoring gambling’s volatile nature. Enjoyment of online slots should stem from viewing them as entertainment, not a consistent income source. Responsible gambling, including setting loss and win limits and knowing when to stop, is essential for a sustainable and enjoyable gaming experience.

What is Personal Accident Insurance & How Does It Work?

Personal accident insurance stands as a crucial safeguard in today’s unpredictable world, offering financial protection and peace of mind to individuals and families alike. This specialized form of insurance is designed to provide coverage for a range of unfortunate events, including accidental death, disability, and injury, ensuring that the financial repercussions of such incidents do not add to the emotional distress they cause.

It caters to various needs, from medical reimbursements for treatments like MRI scans to lump-sum payouts for more severe outcomes, making it a versatile solution for anyone looking to secure their financial future against unforeseen accidents.

The importance of Personal Accident Insurance cannot be overstated, especially for those with active lifestyles, professionals navigating daily commutes, or families seeking an extra layer of security. It fills the gaps left by traditional health insurance, covering incidents that might otherwise lead to significant financial strain.

By offering customizable policies that can be tailored to individual needs and preferences, personal accident insurance ensures that policyholders have the right level of protection, providing a critical financial safety net that allows them to focus on recovery without the burden of financial worry.

Understanding Personal Accident Insurance

Definition and Purpose

Personal accident insurance is a type of general insurance designed to offer financial support in the unfortunate event of an accident leading to injury, disability, or death. Unlike health insurance, which covers general medical expenses, personal accident insurance specifically addresses the financial impact of accidents. This insurance is vital for anyone looking to safeguard themselves and their families from the unforeseen financial strain caused by accidents.

The Primary Purpose of Personal Accident Insurance

The core aim of personal accident insurance is to provide financial compensation and support during the recovery period following an accident. This type of insurance is designed for individuals across various professions and lifestyles, offering a safety net that helps maintain financial stability and cover unexpected medical expenses in the wake of an accident.

Coverage Offered

Types of Incidents Covered

Personal accident insurance policies typically cover a wide range of incidents, including accidental death, permanent total or partial disability, and temporary total disability. The coverage extends to various accidents, from minor injuries to severe, life-altering conditions, ensuring policyholders are financially protected in diverse scenarios.

Special Coverage for Medical Treatments

In addition to compensation for accidents, personal accident insurance often includes coverage for specific medical treatments related to accident injuries. This can encompass emergency treatments, follow-up visits, physiotherapy, and even advanced diagnostic tests like MRI scans, providing a comprehensive safety net that supports the insured’s recovery process].

Key Features of Personal Accident Insurance

Coverage Scope

Personal accident insurance is designed to offer financial protection in the event of accidental death, disability, or injury. This type of insurance is crucial for providing a safety net, ensuring that the insured or their beneficiaries receive compensation under unfortunate circumstances. The coverage typically includes a range of accidents, from minor injuries that require outpatient treatment to severe cases leading to permanent disability or death.

Personal accident insurance policies are comprehensive, covering a wide array of incidents. This includes slip and fall accidents, road traffic accidents, and injuries sustained from a variety of physical activities. The insurance extends to cover not only immediate medical expenses but also long-term rehabilitation costs, making it an essential part of one’s financial planning.

Benefits and Payouts

Personal accident insurance offers significant financial benefits, including medical reimbursements for treatments related to the accident. This can cover a range of medical expenses, from emergency treatments and hospital stays to rehabilitation services like physiotherapy.

Additionally, in cases of permanent disability, the policy provides financial support to help maintain the insured’s quality of life despite their inability to work.

Examples of Payout Scenarios and How They Support the Insured

In the event of an accident leading to disability, the insurance policy may offer a lump sum payout, aiding in covering immediate and long-term financial needs. For accidental death, beneficiaries receive compensation, ensuring financial security in the insured’s absence. These payouts are designed to alleviate the financial burden on the insured or their families, allowing them to focus on recovery and adaptation to life after the accident.

Personal accident insurance stands as a critical component of comprehensive financial planning, offering protection against the unpredictable nature of accidents. By understanding its coverage scope and the benefits it provides, individuals can make informed decisions to safeguard themselves and their loved ones against unforeseen financial strains.

Who Needs Personal Accident Insurance?

Target Audience

Personal accident insurance is not just for high-risk occupations; it’s a critical safety net for everyone. Whether you’re a professional working in an office, a sports enthusiast who regularly engages in physical activities, or a parent looking to protect your family, personal accident insurance offers a layer of financial security against the unexpected.

The policy is particularly relevant for those who might not have comprehensive health insurance coverage, providing peace of mind in knowing that you’re protected against the financial implications of accidental injuries.

Personal accident insurance is versatile and can be tailored to fit various lifestyles and occupational risks. From office workers who might think they’re at low risk yet are susceptible to accidents during commutes, to individuals involved in more physically demanding or outdoor activities, this insurance ensures that you’re financially covered. It’s also crucial for families to provide an essential safety net that helps cover medical expenses or provides financial support in case of severe accidents].

Evaluating Your Need

Evaluating your need for personal accident insurance involves a careful assessment of your daily activities, lifestyle, and existing coverage. Consider factors such as your occupation, hobbies, and the level of physical activity involved in your daily routine.

Reflect on your current health insurance plan to identify any gaps that personal accident insurance could fill, especially concerning accident-related injuries and treatments. Understanding these aspects will help you make an informed decision about adding personal accident insurance to your financial planning strategy.

Choosing the Right Personal Accident Insurance Plan

Factors to Consider

When selecting a personal accident insurance plan, it’s crucial to consider various factors to ensure you’re adequately covered. Key considerations include:

  • Coverage Options: Look for plans that cover a wide range of incidents, from accidental death and permanent disability to temporary disabilities and injuries. The scope of coverage can significantly impact the protection you receive.
  • Insurer Reputation: Choose an insurer with a strong reputation for customer service and claims handling. Research their track record to ensure they’re reliable and responsive in times of need.
  • Comparing Policies: Don’t settle for the first policy you come across. Compare different plans from various insurers to find the best rates and coverage that suit your needs. Pay attention to the fine print and understand the terms and conditions thoroughly.

Choosing the right personal accident insurance plan involves careful consideration of your specific needs, lifestyle, and the level of risk you’re exposed to. By evaluating these factors and customizing your policy accordingly, you can ensure comprehensive protection that offers peace of mind and financial security in the event of an accident.

Customization and Flexibility

Personal accident insurance policies offer a degree of customization and flexibility, allowing you to tailor coverage to your specific needs:

  • Customization: Many insurers offer the option to customize your personal accident insurance policy. This can include adjusting the sum insured, choosing between different levels of coverage, and adding or removing specific benefits. Customization ensures that the policy fits your lifestyle and risk profile perfectly.
  • Flexibility and Optional Add-ons: Look for plans that offer flexibility in terms of policy duration, payment options, and the ability to add optional benefits such as coverage for medical expenses, hospitalization, and daily allowances. These add-ons can provide additional protection and peace of mind.

European Gas Supply Diversification: New Strategy for Curing Old Mistakes

While the measures taken to secure gas supplies this winter in the EU have been successful, there is a need to maintain this momentum in the long term. Gas demand is expected to remain strong in the coming years, and diversifying supplies seems the only strategy for Europe to provide itself with sufficient energy stock.

After the gas supply scare that gripped Europe last winter, the continent’s energy landscape is looking notably more secure this season. A combination of proactive measures taken by governments and the emergence of new gas sources has significantly bolstered Europe’s gas reserves, reassuring consumers and businesses alike.

“This is the second winter that Europe is experiencing without Russian gas,” said Kim Fustier, HSBC Holdings Plc head of European oil & gas research. “The fact that there is now a precedent — the 2022-2023 winter that went without any issues — is helping to calm traders’ nerves.”

“There is now a significant potential” for the EU to ditch Russian LNG supplies, believes Ben McWilliams, affiliate fellow at the think-tank Bruegel. The union’s countries are rushing into action to reduce dependence on Russian gas, and, consequently, the bloc is expected to increase LNG supplies from other regions over the next two years. The current situation shows that the balances in the natural gas markets are shifting, thanks to not only the adopted legislative measures, but to new sources as well. The latter are diverse and abundant, but the question with them hasn’t been finalized yet.

Diversifying Supply Routes

A key factor in Europe’s improved gas security is the diversification of its supply routes, with the US gripping the role of the region’s largest supplier. America’s booming shipments today account for about half of the region’s LNG imports, a share that is widely expected to grow further. And when considering gas shipped through pipelines as well, the US is the bloc’s second-largest supplier after its neighbor Norway.

At the same time, Europe is now wary of over-relying on a single supplier. Although the European Commission seems not to be concerned much about a growing dependency on the US or Norwegian LNG with regards to political risks, other dangers still remain: take, for instance, the Biden administration just now delaying consideration of new LNG export terminals in the United States, or gas prices soaring across Europe after summer outages at three major Norwegian facilities. A first harbinger of an undersupply disaster, the German industrial crisis caused by energy costs skyrocketing in 2022, has brought less consequences than expected – but still left the EU thinking that putting all eggs in one basket isn’t the best strategy, and that the search for new LNG suppliers must go on.

Existing and prospective sources

Russia may possess four of top ten largest natural gas fields by production, but there’s still plenty of fish in the sea when it comes to natural gas-producing states. The market offers are geographically diverse, and a buyer as large as the European Union is sure to find new suppliers, for now and for future.

Here’s for instance, Qatar, a long-known seller of fossil fuels around the world. The state sits in the top current LNG suppliers to Europe, and is now considered as one of its main partners: “In Europe, we have live discussions that are ongoing that are quite serious. More serious in some places than others,” Saad al-Kaabi, the Qatar state minister for energy, said.

This cooperation stems from well-established reputation of the supplier – and also from prospects of steady flows of the resource in the future. Recently, state-owned QatarEnergy has signed several supply deals for its massive North Field expansion project, which is expected to produce 126 million metric tons of LNG per annum by 2027, with ongoing prospecting in search for new reserves: “If we think there is more capacity, we’ll probably do more,” al-Kaabi told.

Expectations of new supplies affect not only the work with established sellers, but considerations of new ones as well. So, now analysts are monitoring Mozambique LNG Project, under development by a consortium of European and Asian companies led by French TotalEnergies SE. The project, one of the largest in Africa by expected production capacity, will likely resume work early this year after a near-three-year freeze due to Islamic State-linked militants’ raids in the country. Once its doors are open, the global natural gas market will receive a new player with 65 trillion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas waiting in stock. A part of this reserve has already been earmarked for Europe by Britain’s Centrica and Electricité de France SA having signed long-term deals to buy much of the plant’s output, and for rapidly growing Asian demand with the latest contract for a supply of 1 million tons of LNG for India.

Other local sites are progressing as well: a group headed by Exxon Mobil Corp. aims to build a similar facility, designed to produce more gas than anticipated before the attacks. Together the two projects could produce up to 31 million tons of LNG annually, about a third of the European Union’s imports last year—making the region an important new source for its intercontinental neighbors.

Long-term considerations

The current situation with energy reserves for the EU offers a sense of relief, but the union isn’t going to celebrate it yet. The bloc has set ambitious targets for reducing its reliance on fossil fuels: the 2022 REPowerEU plan aims to “make Europe independent from all Russian fossil fuels well before 2030”. Work on the plan is still in progress, and to achieve the goal, says Jacques Delors Institute’s Energy Center, the union needs not only to step up the energy transition and roll out new measures, but proceed with diversifying gas supply sources as well.

Indeed, natural gas already plays a significant role in the transition to cleaner energy sources across the world. Demand is expected to remain strong in the coming years, as LNG becomes the energy of transition, gradually replacing coal in Asia, and supporting energy needs for heavy industries while renewables are still fledging.

At that, analysts are skeptical as to whether the natural gas market will become the buyer’s market: “Europe will depend on LNG supply,” says Anders Opedal, Head of Norway’s Equinor ASA. The rush for new contracts and positive forecasts is testament of this, and of that there is a need for the EU to maintain the momentum in the long term. And although the outlook for Europe’s gas supply is now more positive than it has been in a while, we are yet to see if the region learned its lesson and whether it will be able to provide its residents with all the energy they need.

Geopolitical Swing States Have a Meaningful Role in Shaping the AI-enabled Future

By Marcelina Horrillo Husillos, Journalist and Correspondent at The World Financial Review

Old tricks to manipulate and control public opinion in the era of communication: the impact of noise and biased information in audiences

We are well into the 4th Industrial Revolution, and a new relationship between technology and geopolitics is emerging. Artificial intelligence, Blockchain, Metaverse, Web3, Web4, Tokenization, Robotics, and 5G capabilities are quickly becoming the frontlines of either a new work or social system.

The race for AI proliferation intensifies geopolitical rivalries and corporate completion as countries seek to harness AI’s potential for economic advantage, technological supremacy, and influence over global norms and standards.

The world is increasingly fragmented; communication remains the most significant brace of globalization. But tools for communication are primarily provided by private “Big Tech” companies, which are scarcely accountable for the nation-states they work in, and have national roots that can be seen as channels of outside influence, be it American, Chinese, or anybody else’s.

Democratic societies may face challenges from AI-generated misinformation during elections, not to mention mass unemployment or societal pushback from rapid technological change. Authoritarian regimes may find AI to be an unwelcome empowering tool for individuals, and poorer countries may suffer from a rapidly widening “digital divide” leading to even greater economic inequality. Ultimately, nations will pursue AI-driven development according to their prevailing political, societal, and economic models.

The danger of using AI for domination is real, and how nations handle the potential social, cultural, and political disruptions from AI will also impact their relative power. Tech-leading communication channels speed up the communication process, but paradoxically create saturation and unnecessary noise that leads to a great deal of confusion about almost any topic across the audiences.

AI and Trust

Thousands of CEOs, technologists, researchers, academics, and others signed an open letter in early 2023 calling for a pause in AI deployments, even as millions of people start using ChatGPT and other generative AI systems.

The March letter starts by calling out AI’s “profound risks to society and humanity” and chastising AI labs for engaging in “an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one can understand, predict, or reliably control.”

They are not the only ones worried about AI: 46% of respondents to a February 2023 Monmouth University poll said AI would do equal amounts of harm and good, while 41% believe the technology would do more harm. Only 9% of respondents believe computer scientists can develop AI that would benefit society.

Although AI has been tasked with creating everything from computer code to visual art, it lacks original thought, and its use in some circumstances demonstrates its limits and potential to harm others. These real-world examples demonstrate how AI can be inappropriately used:

In late spring 2023, a New York lawyer faced judicial scrutiny for submitting court filings citing fictitious cases that had been made up by ChatGPT. The lawyer acknowledged using ChatGPT to draft the document and told a federal judge that he didn’t realize the tool could make such an error.

In 2019, a video of a drunk Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat who was then U.S. House Speaker, circulated online. The video was a deepfake, a form of media that has been altered using AI. The believability of that Pelosi video, and others that followed, set off alarms about how AI-generated content could be used to distort truth and spread misinformation.

Another well-publicized example of a poorly executed AI use case happened in 2016 when Microsoft released a chatbot on Twitter. Microsoft engineers designed the bot to act like a female teenager and expected Tay—the name given to the bot—to learn to be more like other teens as she engaged.

AI makes predictions based on algorithms and the training data it has been fed, and although machine learning algorithms help the machine learn over time, it doesn’t have the same capacity humans have for being selective, building criteria around ideas, and constructing unbiased common sense. It is a very rapid, effective tech tool that replicates the same stored data from the internet without moving forward.

Tech shaping Geopolitics

Geopolitical swing states will have a meaningful role in shaping the AI-enabled future. In particular, the UK, the UAE, Israel, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea, Taiwan, and India are the key players in the category. Moreover, these players may form innovation blocs, creating alliances and partnerships with more dominant states or cooperating to pursue common goals.

The most profound impact of generative AI may be on economic growth. Goldman Sachs Research estimates a baseline case in which the widespread adoption of AI could contribute 1.5% to annual productivity growth over ten years, lifting global GDP by nearly $7 trillion. The upside case carries a remarkable 2.9% total uplift. However, these outcomes are not guaranteed and will be determined by four key components: energy, computing, data, and models.

The technology’s development will shape its geopolitical effects. Next year will witness several key milestones for the future of generative AI; the world’s three largest democracies, and approximately 41% of the global population, will participate in national elections. AI will continue to accelerate and be adopted by state and commercial actors for everything from defense to health care to education and more. At the end of 2024, we will have a better idea of how AI will transform scientific discovery, labor, and the balance of power.

Noise in the Communication era

In the so-called communication era, misinformation and disinformation are ramping up in the media and the internet. Organized media manipulation campaigns were found in 81 surveyed countries, up 15% from 70 countries in 2019. Governments, public relations firms, and political parties are producing misinformation on an industrial scale, according to the report. It shows disinformation has become a common strategy, with more than 93% of the countries (76 out of 81) seeing disinformation deployed as part of political communication.

Creating fake news and inaccurate content deliberately drives the recipient’s attention to other matters, manipulating their perception and, in consequence, their opinions and behavior around things. Creating public noise has been a standard tactic of the dominant power to build confusion in public opinion. A confused public opinion over-saturated by tones of disinformation presents itself as weak and unable to see what is happening around them.

Fear is also a very strong tool that can blur people’s logic and change their behavior. The cumulative effect of these individual judgments by citizens over time shapes public opinion. There is always the tendency of those who control the levers of power to “manage” information, and by doing so, present those involved in the best light. Public opinion is the stock in trade of all who hold office as trust. Once lost, is very hard to rebuild, whether in the public or private sector.

Conclusion

We are at the beginning of a new order, and its future is uncertain. The long-term effects of technological revolutions are not made clear overnight.

Geopolitical competition is a constant, but the technologies that animate that competition are not. While the United States, China, and Russia do not agree on many things, they all acknowledge that AI could reshape the balance of power.

Today’s geopolitical rivals are putting AI at the center of their national strategies. In 2017, Russian President Vladimir Putin said, “Artificial intelligence is the future not only of Russia but of all of mankind.” Five years later, Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping declared, “We will focus on national strategic needs, gather strength to carry out indigenous and leading scientific and technological research, and resolutely win the battle in key core technologies.” And, in 2023, US President Joe Biden summarized what AI will mean for humanity: “We’re going to see more technological change in the next 10—maybe the next 5 years—than we’ve seen in the last 50 years…Artificial intelligence is accelerating that change.”

Today, there are two AI superpowers, the United States and China. But they are not the only countries that will define the technology’s future. Earlier this year, we identified a category of geopolitical swing states—non-great powers with the capacity, agency, and increasing will to assert themselves on the global stage. Many of these states have the power to meaningfully shape the future of AI. There are also emerging economies that have the potential to reap the rewards of AI—if the right policies and institutions are established—and whose talent, resources, and voices are essential to ensure that the creation of a human-like intelligence benefits all of humanity.
