Remote work has revolutionized the professional landscape, and few understand this better than Cristi Tobelmann, Senior Vice President of Human Resources at DaySmart Software. One of the key advantages of remote work, according to Tobelmann, is the opportunity for uninterrupted “flow time.” This uninterrupted time is essential for deep, thoughtful work, whether it’s software coding for engineers or financial analysis for data professionals. “Being able to have uninterrupted time is really important if you’re doing deep thinking work,” she remarked, contrasting this with the constant social interactions typical of an office environment.

Overcoming Challenges in Remote Work

While remote work offers numerous benefits, it also presents challenges, particularly in fostering creativity and innovation. Tobelmann acknowledged that forming close relationships can be more difficult when interactions are limited to project-based meetings or virtual communications. “You have to really take the time and attention to build relationships,” she advised, emphasizing the importance of understanding customers and employees deeply to come up with creative solutions.

Cultural challenges and miscommunications are also potential pitfalls in a dispersed workforce. Time zone differences and varying cultural norms can complicate collaboration. Written communication, which lacks the nuance of face-to-face interactions, can lead to misunderstandings. “It’s hard to always convey the emotion that you want in a written word,” Tobelmann pointed out.

Strategies for Building Relationships

Building relationships in a remote setting requires intentional effort. Tobelmann explained that successful remote leadership cannot operate on autopilot. Managers must actively invest in developing their team’s strengths, recognizing their contributions, and maintaining regular communication. “You have to intentionally set time aside for communication and team building,” she emphasized.

To address the challenge of forming close relationships, DaySmart has implemented various strategies. These include using technology tools like Slack and Donut to facilitate random conversations and pairing employees for virtual coffee chats. The senior leadership team also engages in small group chats and “ask me anything” sessions to foster a sense of connection. “Lowering the threshold for interaction makes it more likely for folks to join in, especially younger employees,” Tobelmann noted.

Enhancing Creativity Through Virtual Activities

“In order to be really creative and innovative at work, we have to also feed ourselves as well,” she said, highlighting the importance of mindfulness and self-care.

Innovation often stems from casual interactions and weak ties between employees. To promote these interactions, DaySmart has explored various virtual activities. These include virtual coffee hours, where employees are randomly paired for casual chats, and group activities like video game sessions, virtual movie watching, and virtual escape rooms. “These activities help build bonds across groups and facilitate creativity and innovation,” Tobelmann explained.

Technology plays a crucial role in these efforts. Instant messaging platforms and chatbots can facilitate conversations, while outside facilitators can lead icebreaker activities to encourage team bonding. These initiatives are particularly important for younger employees who may have limited experience with physical office environments.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Remote Work

As DaySmart continues to refine its remote work culture, Tobelmann is excited about the potential for new developments in flexible work. One area she is particularly passionate about is integrating well-being into work practices. “In order to be really creative and innovative at work, we have to also feed ourselves as well,” she said, highlighting the importance of mindfulness and self-care.

Consumer Behavior and Inflation Dynamics in Turkey: A Unique Economic Puzzle

Turkey’s economic behavior contrasts with classical models, with rising inflation sometimes increasing demand due to speculative buying. Traditional policies, like raising interest rates, struggle to balance inflation and unemployment. Heavy borrowing and reliance on imports amplify inflation, creating long-term instability risks that demand structural reforms. 

In most economies, as inflation rises, demand tends to fall—at least that’s what classical economic theory suggests. The basic premise, rooted in rational consumer behavior, is that when prices go up, people buy less. However, in countries like Turkey, this relationship doesn’t always hold. Instead, a unique blend of inflationary pressure and consumer habits has led to economic behavior that defies standard models. 

In developed economies, consumer behavior is generally more predictable. As the Consumer Price Index (CPI) climbs, demand for goods with high income elasticity, like luxury items, tends to drop. But in Turkey, we see a different story, rising prices don’t instantly prevent demand. 

Stagflation and Turkey’s Economic Reality 

Traditionally, economists have relied on the Phillips Curve to explain the relationship between inflation and unemployment. The theory suggests that as inflation rises, unemployment falls and vice versa. However, Turkey’s current economic situation tells a different story. Although stagflation isn’t present now, unemployment remains above desirable levels despite being at a decade low, and this trend is expected to persist. Contributing factors include rising labor costs and capital outflow from the industrial sector. 

In this complex environment, traditional monetary policies, such as raising interest rates, struggle to manage inflation without worsening unemployment. In Turkey, the challenge is particularly serious as inflation fails to reduce demand, and in some cases, it seems to encourage speculative buying. 

Turkey’s “Rational” Irrationality 

Consumer behavior in Turkey exhibits a form of “rational irrationality.” Initially, as the CPI rises, demand holds steady. But beyond a certain threshold, demand for goods—especially those consumers fear will become even more expensive—actually increases. This behavior, driven by inflationary expectations, leads to “speculative buying!” and “stockpiling!”. Fundamentally, consumers are trying to protect themselves from the risk of future price hikes. 

However, this speculative demand is a double-edged sword. While it might drive consumption in the short term, it pushes borrowing to unsustainable levels, as credit card debt and consumer loans escalete. Turkey’s reliance on borrowing to maintain consumption levels, especially in the face of high inflation, creates a risky cycle that threatens long-term economic stability. 

Debt Dynamics and the Risk of Financial Instability 

Turkey’s borrowing boom is reflective of economic theories such as Hyman Minsky’s Financial Instability Hypothesis. Minsky argued that extended periods of growth and rising borrowing lead to financial crises. Turkey’s current situation fits this pattern, with consumer debt rapidly rising even as inflation eats away at purchasing power. 

One significant factor worsening Turkey’s economic instability is the relationship between domestic and international interest rates. As long as real interest rates in Turkey remain lower compared to those in the US and Eurozone, despite any rate cuts in these regions, demand for foreign currency will likely exceed demand for the TRY. In a high-inflation environment, low real interest rates make foreign currency more attractive, putting upward pressure on the exchange rates. This dynamic can further weaken the TRY and increase the demand for foreign currency, complicating the country’s economic recovery. 

Due to the increase in interest rates, it is crucial to carefully monitor the adverse effects of the increasingly difficult access to financing in Turkish lira. This situation could lead to issues such as rising financing costs and slowed economic growth. Additionally, the high budget deficit remains a risk factor. The budget deficit may limit the government’s ability to maintain economic balance and could lead to increased borrowing. The rise in borrowing during a period of restricted access to financing highlights the need for structural reforms. These reforms are essential for ensuring economic stability and supporting growth. Failure to implement structural reforms could worsen economic problems and threaten long-term economic stability. 

The mismatch between debt growth and income is particularly concerning. Credit cards and consumer loans have been used to fuel short-term consumption, but this strategy is unsustainable. As borrowing costs rise and inflation continues to reduce real incomes, a tipping point is inevitable. 

The Vicious Cycle of Inflation and Borrowing 

Turkey’s heavy reliance on imports further complicates the picture. As exchange rates rise, the cost of imported goods skyrockets, driving up CPI and fueling cyclical inflation. Consumers, aware of this trend, prefer to convert their savings into goods rather than keeping them in the form of cash, exacerbating inflationary pressures. 

This behavior is reminiscent of historical hyperinflation cases, such as 1920s Germany and 2000s Zimbabwe, where people rushed to buy goods, fearing that money would lose value too quickly. In Turkey, this pattern is feeding a vicious cycle of inflation, where speculative demand outpaces supply, leading to even higher prices. 

Looking Forward: Navigating an Uncertain Future 

Turkey’s economic landscape is complex, and solutions are far from simple. While speculative demand and borrowing have driven consumption in recent years, this trend cannot continue indefinitely. At some point, the capacity to borrow will run out, and demand will fall, potentially leading to economic contraction. 

The Turkish government faces a challenging balancing act. Policies aimed at curbing inflation, such as raising interest rates, must be carefully calibrated to avoid triggering a debt crisis. At the same time, structural reforms are needed to reduce reliance on borrowing and shift the economy toward sustainable growth. 

Turkey’s situation is a cautionary tale of the delicate balance between inflation, consumer behavior, and borrowing. While the short-term effects of speculative demand may keep the economy afloat, the long-term risks of financial instability loom large.

US 2024 Election and the Way to a Calamitous Trade War

The 2024 US election is not just about democracy but about big media, big money and big defense. It is setting the stage to a new trade war and lethal geopolitics that could destabilize global economic prospects for years to come.

For months, the U.S. presidential race has been hyped by national and international media with its incessant hunger for the latest sound-bites, spiced with expert opinions.

Nonetheless, views don’t make the world go around; money does, especially big money. Polls are shaped by media. Media is bought by campaigns. Candidates’ views are tailored to and by campaign finance, which is dominated by the powerful interests that make and break most Democratic and Republican campaigns.

Here’s how the US presidential race (really) works.                 

Trump protectionism and economic coercion                     

When former presidency Trump began his first campaign eight years ago, he pledged to end America’s foreign interventionism and focus on the defense of U.S. borders. The big money disagreed. So, Trump coupled his America First protectionism with muscular interventionism.

The real-estate tycoon has pledged to impose a tariff of 60% or more on Chinese goods building on the reversal of America’s free-trade policies that he implemented in his first term. The stance would likely build on the ideas of Robert Lighthizer, his ex-U.S. trade representative, who would raise tariffs on China, cut off investment between the two countries, and block Chinese social-media firms until China’s trade surplus would magically disappear. 

If the stated objective is to reduce the trade deficit with China, the actual effect has been precisely the reverse. Trump’s economic policies and trade protectionism would accelerate U.S. deficit causing public debt to soar. In 2025, Trump would first trash Biden-Harris geopolitics and then build on it. He would push back on China and rally partners to raise pressure in the South China Sea.

These policies will destabilize East and Southeast Asia’s economic development. But that’s not Trump’s concern. America First is.

Harris: From America First to American Fist            

After stating repeatedly that she “is not Biden,” Harris would largely continue Biden’s trade policy. Effectively, she would retain most of Trump’s tariffs on China while raising some (e.g., electric vehicles). Managed trade would prevail in steel and commercial aircraft with key allies.

Like Biden, Harris would continue Trump’s blocking of new appointments to the WTO’s dispute-settlement body, thus undermining its enforcement role.

Supporting across-the-board interventionism, Harris would build on Biden’s Indo-Pacific Economic Framework stressing cooperation on tax, digital trade and supply chains, without reducing tariffs. Like Biden, she will seek to counter China by strengthening partnerships in the Pacific.

In particular, Harris is likely to foster the U.S.-Philippines collaboration on the South China Sea. Her administration wants to tie Beijing and Manila into a longstanding conflict to undermine Taiwan’s eventual integration with the Chinese mainland; if necessary, at the cost of the Philippines economic and sovereign future. In the big picture, Manila is collateral damage.

Under Harris, the America First stance abroad will be replaced by American Fist; preferably with the support of like-minded military-industrial complexes in Europe and Japan.

From Big Media…            

On September 12, Harris scored 47.1% against Trump’s 44.3%. But the race is too close to call. Until the Republican and Democratic conventions in July, Trump had a +3% lead over Biden in a tight race complicated by the independent campaign of Robert F. Kennedy, which garnered 9% of the polls.

After the national conventions – following a great amount of behind-the-façade wheeling and dealing and the financiers’ effective blackmailing – Biden was replaced by his Vice-President Kamala Harris in late July. Meanwhile Kennedy withdrew from the race and largely joined the Trump camp (Figure 1).

The effects were immediate. At the surface, Harris gained an almost 3% lead over Trump; effectively 6 percentage points. Since Harris represented essentially Biden’s old policies, how was this possible?

First of all, Kennedy’s strategic move proved less effective than expected because his polls had dwindled to close to 5%. In part, Harris’s catch-up stemmed from an electoral Viagra effect in which a more youthful face ensured the Democratic constituencies a collective relief. The aging Biden was seen as too old for another term in the White House.

But finally, it was shrewd political marketing and media promotion. As Harris took over, Democratic marketers began to hammer the new message, “There’s new energy! There’s new excitement! The campaign is on fire!”

… to Big Money                 

Of course, nothing had changed. Through Biden’s first term, Harris had suffered PR nightmares causing her ratings to significantly erode. However, as mainstream media soon embraced the Democrats’ political marketing messages, the tight race boosted ratings allowing these mainstream outlets to gain viewers during national conventions, even over Trump’s attempted-assassination raised-fist iconography (Figure 2).

The Harris “New Energy!” Campaign

By late August, the media race was normalizing. With the 2024 Democratic National Convention in the rearview, the status quo among the cable news networks was restored. Fox News recaptured the top spot in total viewers and the adults 25-54 demo. CNN claimed second place, moving ahead of MSNBC in both primetime and total viewers.

Such ratings require lots of money. And in the race, where candidate money is coupled with outside money, Harris’s ($775 million) lead is a whopping 35 percentage points over Trump ($575 million). The big funders of the Harris campaign represent big technology (Alphabet/Google, Microsoft. Amazon, Apple, Meta/Facebook). The big money behind Trump represents billionaires, Israeli-American funders, aerospace and energy money (Figure 3).

Geopolitical trade wars               

As projected by some in the late 2010s, the Trump administration’s embrace of trade protectionism and coercive geopolitics undermined the global recovery. As the Biden administration chose not to reset Trump protectionism, it contributed dramatically to global geoeconomic fragmentation disrupting global growth prospects.

These are the policies that the Harris administration will build upon and the Trump administration would accelerate. If the effect has been disastrous in the past, it is likely to be worse in the coming years.

Starting in 2018, Trump’s tariff war targeted mainly Chinese intermediate inputs and capital equipment; that is the mainland’s “world factory.” In the past decade, the Chinese mainland has become a global science and innovation hub, however. As a result, in 2025, the Harris-Trump administrations are likely to target largely the final consumer goods. They hope to protect domestic industries while seeking to avoid imposing costs on their supply chains.

In brief, the US tariff wars will no longer be about protectionism against assembly plants and cheap products. They will try to contain and crush advanced industries and cutting-edge technologies in China. Since this makes little economic sense, China (and other large emerging economies in the Global South) will be increasingly portrayed as “different” and the “other” – as the geopolitical “enemy” par excellence.

Creating “enemies” to hate                   

For almost half a century, Gallup has polled American views on China. Following Beijing’s 2001 membership in the WTO, these views were initially divided but steadily improved. “Americans have been feeling more positively toward China in recent years,” Gallup stated in 2027, “and now 50% say they have a favorable opinion of that country.”

With the misguided portrayal of China as the enemy, the balance has drastically shifted. Today, 77% of Americans view China unfavorably and only 20% favorably, thanks to the revolving doors between the Pentagon, the State Department and the US military-industrial complex (Figure 4).

This unwarranted, manufactured outcome didn’t have to happen. With continued improvement of US-Chinese ties, global recovery and the rise of the Global South would have become the new norm. But that was not seen in the West’s interest.

The ominous times looming ahead are reflected by the recent passage of two bills (H.R. 1398, H.R. 9456) that seek to reinstate the now-defunct China Initiative and add more restrictions to the current Alien Land Laws. As critics warn, reimplementing the notorious program is likely to create “conditions that fuel anti-Asian violence.”

The political viciousness accompanying the US 2024 presidential race is likely to be followed by more domestic and international turmoil starting in 2025.

On the other hand, it relies on cryptographic techniques and consensus algorithms to provide trust without needing a middleman.

Transparency is another significant advantage. Since all participants in the network have access to the same data, transactions are visible to everyone, and any changes can be quickly detected. As more participants join the network and more transactions are processed, the size of the blockchain grows, and the time it takes to reach consensus can increase. This can lead to slower transaction times and higher fees. Various solutions, such as layer 2 scaling techniques and sharding, are being developed to address these issues, but they are still in the early stages of implementation.

Another challenge is governance. In decentralized networks, there is no central authority to make decisions about upgrades or changes to the system. Instead, changes must be agreed upon by the majority of the network’s participants. This can lead to disagreements and delays in implementing improvements, as seen in the case of Bitcoin’s block size debate.

Finally, there is the issue of energy consumption. Some blockchain networks, like Bitcoin, use proof-of-work as their consensus mechanism, which requires large amounts of computational power and energy. This has raised concerns about the environmental impact of maintaining these networks. However, alternative consensus mechanisms like proof-of-stake are being explored to reduce energy consumption.

As blockchain technology continues to evolve, decentralized networks are expected to play an even more significant role in shaping the future of industries worldwide. Amazon’s New Office-Only Policy Goes Against the Grain and Will Cost Them Dearly

Amazon’s recent decision to require corporate employees to return to the office five days a week is generating significant controversy. In a memo to employees, CEO Andy Jassy emphasized the benefits of in-person work, such as increased collaboration, innovation, and cultural connection. Yet, this stance flies in the face of a growing body of research that demonstrates the advantages of hybrid work models—not full-time office work—for productivity, employee performance, and retention. Moreover, many organizations have been tired of fighting RTO battles and have moved on to more important priorities, allowing their employees more flexibility: thus, Amazon’s top-down policy stands out as a regressive approach likely to backfire.

Going Against the Grain

For example, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported a year-over-year increase in the number of employees working from home, either some of the time or all the time, rising from 19.5% in August 2023 to 22.8% in August 2024. Among hybrid workers – those who work remotely only some of the time – the share climbed from 9.2% to 11.7% over the same period; those who worked remotely all the time increased to 11.1%, up from 10.3%. Government data, representing the best kind of evidence available, suggests that the large majority of employers, unlike Amazon, are moving away from rigid in-office requirements and embracing flexibility.

Employees come to the office only for superficial compliance, to meet with a colleague and drink a cup of coffee, known as “coffee badging,” thus rather complying with the letter of the law while undermining its spirit.

In large part, that’s because senior leaders across various industries have started to realize that the effort to monitor and enforce strict in-office attendance is often more trouble than it’s worth, as I have seen from clients who I helped determine their distributed work models. Instead of fostering collaboration and creativity, these mandates frequently lead to resentment and disengagement, as the opposition to heavy-handed in-office mandates has not subsided, leading companies to move on to more important priorities. Some organizations are even experiencing a “hushed hybrid” trend, where managers quietly agree with their teams to reduce in-office days, acknowledging the impracticality and inefficiency of enforcing stringent rules.

Additionally, employees come to the office only for superficial compliance, to meet with a colleague and drink a cup of coffee, known as “coffee badging,” thus rather complying with the letter of the law while undermining its spirit. No wonder that the 2023 Global Traffic Scorecard by traffic analysis firm INRIX Inc. observed significant changes in commuting patterns, with a decrease in peak morning and evening traffic congestion and an increase around midday.

The Mismatch Between Amazon’s Approach and Workplace Realities

Amazon’s return-to-office mandate, as outlined by Jassy, is built on the premise that proximity fosters productivity. Jassy argues that being physically present in the office enhances collaboration, brainstorming, and invention while reinforcing the company’s culture. This rationale is not unique; it echoes a broader, albeit increasingly outdated, belief among some executives that in-person work inherently drives better outcomes.

However, evidence suggests otherwise. Research increasingly points to hybrid work—not a full five-day office week—as the optimal balance for maximizing productivity and job satisfaction. A variety of studies, including one in Nature, one of the two most prominent scientific journals, have shown that hybrid work models, which combine remote and in-office work, lead to higher levels of employee performance and engagement. For instance, scholars find employees working in a hybrid model often experience fewer distractions and take fewer sick days than their fully in-office counterparts, leading to higher productivity. This approach also offers flexibility that helps attract and retain top talent—a significant factor for tech companies like Amazon. Forcing employees to come to the office five days a week ignores these benefits and the significant shift in employee expectations towards flexibility in their work environment.

The Realities of Office-Based Work

While Amazon’s leadership might envision bustling offices filled with spontaneous brainstorming sessions and serendipitous encounters, the reality of office-based work often looks quite different. Much of the work carried out by Amazon’s corporate employees—such as programming, research, data analysis, responding to emails, and participating in videoconferences and phone calls—does not require in-person interaction. In fact, these tasks are often more effectively and efficiently performed in a remote setting, free from the distractions and time costs associated with commuting and navigating office politics.

A more nuanced approach that incorporates both the benefits of in-person collaboration and the advantages of remote work could yield far better results.

The push for a full-time return to the office overlooks the fact that much of today’s knowledge work is independent rather than collaborative. Remote and hybrid models provide the quiet, uninterrupted environments necessary for deep, focused work. For example, software developers often need extended periods of concentration that are far easier to achieve outside the noisy and interruption-laden office environment. Similarly, roles that require heavy research, writing, or data analysis benefit from the kind of deep focus that is more achievable in a controlled home office setting. By forcing employees back into a one-size-fits-all model, Amazon risks reducing overall productivity rather than enhancing it.

Amazon’s decision to enforce a five-day in-office policy comes at a time when many companies are moving in the opposite direction, recognizing the importance of flexibility in today’s work environment. The company risks creating a significant disconnect between its leadership’s expectations and its employees’ preferences. This gap will lead to increased turnover, lower morale, and a potential loss of top talent who are drawn to more progressive companies that offer flexible work arrangements.

A Call for a More Nuanced Approach

If Amazon truly wants to maintain its competitive edge and continue to attract and retain top talent, it needs to reconsider its stance on workplace flexibility. A more nuanced approach that incorporates both the benefits of in-person collaboration and the advantages of remote work could yield far better results. Encouraging a hybrid model that allows employees to choose where they work based on their roles and responsibilities, rather than a blanket mandate, would likely foster a more engaged, productive, and satisfied workforce.
